Did you remove the plastic film from the starter cubes before putting them in the net pot? If not they are probably staying too wet. The other thing it is kinda tricky to get the water level below the net pot just right so the bubble action does not keep the cubes saturated - they need air. I believe that 2ml per gallon is plenty of HydroGuard. Are you using something else that can kill it?

Hey there! Actually after reading your guide I went and bought hydroguard. I did add about 50 ml to the soup I mixed up sunday. Must not have been enough? That or I added it in the wrong sequence. Regardless there is pythium now, so I was wondering if I could sterilize the soup with h202 and add a stronger dose of hydroguard later? Or should I add more hydroguard?

I saw your response in the infirmary as well, I actually did follow your advice on adding the seedlings to the net pots, I then gradually lowered the water level as the roots dipped in, they have a significant amount of space to breath now.

My concern is getting rid of the pythium and re-establishing the beneficial bacteria.
HydroGuard is beneficial bacteria! It will out-compete the pythium.

Hey so my roots grew fast! They were reaching down into the rez within 48 hours of going into the system, I have been able to lower it from 20gallons to 15 gallons, there is plenty of space. I removed the plastic as well. I put in the hydroguard last, then PH'd the water. I think I added a total of 40-50ml for the 15g. However, pythium still took hold. I added a good amount of PH down when I had big fluctuation yesterday, that could have killed them?

I am hoping it would outgrow it, but maybe i did not add enough? 40 hours past rez change and the pythium reached a noticable level. I think it may have started when the PH had a dramatic change.

Can I use the h202 to elimante the current levels of bacteria and try to re-inoculate?

No that should not be an issue normally but I never make big corrections to PH at one time just small ones 0.3 - 0.4 at the most. Also be sure to dilute the buffers in some water before adding to res.

Did you check the date made on the hydroguard? I seem to remember it has a two year shelf life past that date and needs to be used within six months of opening.

You know I did not ask are you sure it is pythium? Can I see a picture tops and roots? and a list of everything in the reservoir some nutrients will stain the roots and look like pythium. I should have started there. My bad.

I’m pretty sure it’s Pythium because of the smell!! I will take a photo of it shortly so we can make sure!

I will also check the date on the hydroguard.

It may be that I didn’t dilute them first. May have killed them off. How should I remedy ? Think taming the bacteria with 3ml/gal of h202 and then adding fresh hydroguard 24-48 hours later will work as mentioned ?

Thank you for all the help

All it says on my bottle of hydroguard is 1308318

Here’s the roots

Do you have any metal fittings (other than stainless steel) anywhere in your system after the water is PHed and nutrients are added? Are you stirring with a metal spoon?

That might also be chemical burn, are the roots slimmey?
