Hurricanes do suck, but when you live on the east coast, they are just a way of life.

There's a ferry now with just people(no cars) that runs to Ocracoke Island from Hatteras. Went over for the day and was talking with some locals at a bar. In 2019 they had a 7' wall of water come over the whole island! Trashed everything that wasn't higher.

If built correctly and not right on the beach, houses can survive quite easily. A friends house in Corolla in the outer banks has been there since the mid 70's with no major damage. Just gotta build right and be prepared!

Took this pick on Ocracoke Island

Believe me…. Obx has been on my list of contenders to move to for quite some time. I didn’t live terribly far from there, so that was usually a weekend destination….weather in a jeep, or on a motorcycle :headbang::headbang:

I sailed a boatload of pungent S.American herb into Ocracoke Inlet in the 1970's. As I remember, all the beach houses were on stilts in case of storm surge. The inlet is marked on the nautical charts as "enter only with local knowledge," because the sandbars move with every storm.

Transiting Oregon Inlet, under the bridge down that way is another tricky one…. :pass:

Yeah it costs me an arm and 3 legs to live here but but it’s my opinion I live in the best year round weather area in the US. Being close to retirement I often think of moving somewhere with less cost of living or taxes or whatever but choosing between heat, excessive rain, humidity, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods always ends the conversation 😂

They used to have a photo of a 44' coastguard lifeboat transiting Oregon Inlet surf in Dutton's textbook on "Piloting, Seamanship, and Small Boat Handling."
