Nuclear drills and tornado drillz is wat we did in the midwest .. tornado drill made sense, but not the nuke drill We did this tuck thing all rolled up wit our hands covering the backs of our headz
I know that feeling.. Nuclear bomb drills were terrifying for me as an Elementary student. Our location was in an identified target area, due to the nearby Air Base and turbine engine factory...So it was the norm. Later in Junior High I realized exactly how worthless these drills were. So during a drill, the Shop teacher led us to the fallout shelter and instructed us to crouch and put our head between our knees. I looked at him and said, ' It's very important that we all do this.. Right?' He said, ' Of course it is!' I said, 'Well, I guess you're right because we all need to be in the best position to kiss our own a$$es goodbye if the bomb should hit near enough..'
Earned myself a week's worth of detention with that remark...
The Stop N Drop crap was ridiculous as hell! If you were as close to the flash, as all those stupid films did back then, the shockwave and firestorm was minutes, if not seconds, away from hitting.
Ya ever noticed that all we had were 'fallout shelters', yet the ways they were to be actually utilized as the government instructed, they would be 'blast shelters'. And the worst thing was, they were designed for neither! Most were just the basement of a large building...... not necessarily fully underground too.
Most of the public ate it up.
Backyard underground bomb shelters........
