The town I grew up in, Rap was almost taboo. I had a friend who's father was a Disc Jockey at the local radio station. The station he worked for upgraded their equipment one year so his father purchased the old equipment and brought it home and gave it to my friend to tinker with in hopes of inspiring him. He set it up but it would only broadcast about 3-4 miles with his puny antenna. He lit it up 88.9 with Rap that the hometown Boys & Girls never heard before.. Houdini, Luke Skywalker, 2 Live Crew, NWA... Along with Metal rock artists like Slayer, Megadeth and the likes. Word of mouth traveled quick, and before long all the kids knew about it.. Took him 9 months to finally be located by the FCC. The vans came in full force.. Fined him $25,000 and took his equipment.
We had a friend when I was a kid that would buy us booze in exchange for weed... But he was a radio/computer guy and he had stuff so we could broadcast radio on 90.5 for just like a couple miles, but enough for people to hear it in their cars:d5: I grew up outside NYC in the 80s/90s so rap was the local music scene here but everybody's parents hated it
