I had cottonmouth and stupid hardcore munchies when you posted it.
In my foggy brain, it reminded me of the burger I used to get at the Subase Pearl Harbor bowling alley for lunch. All their burgers were incredible!
Speaking of food and Subase Pearl........I've eaten at many a galley in the Navy. but that chowhall was the best. I mainly ate breakfast there. Eggs done in any way you can imagine and made to order.
Bubbleheads, submariners, ate VERY well when at sea and in port. I probably ate on every sub that docked in Pearl, even two Boomers, Balistic Missle sub. One boat stood out for MANY reasons. The USS Tautog was a problem child......a lot of age related problems, but a LOT of management problems. If it was in port, I had work on it! I started calling it USS Tagout, because me or one of my guys were always tagging out systems to work on! From time to time, I had to attend afternoon updates to the CO of Subase, as a stand in for the division officer. Sub Squadron CO's were there also. I let USS Tagout slip a couple of times by accident and it would get a couple of chuckles from the other squadron CO's. It spun up the CHENG, Chief Engineer, to no end. Even though that boat was a huge pain in the azz, the head cook made a mean azz corned beef N cabbage. The Master Chief of the boat always let me and my men eat on board when we had active jobs there, since we got more work done without having to leave to go eat elsewhere.
I did learn a lot working on that boat. I did get to work on things that we almost never got to work on at the level of support we normally gave. Quite a few jobs I completed were shipyard level jobs, not that ever stopped me from getting the job done on any boat.
That corned beef N cabbage wuz sooooooooo good!
