Bring your light or flash as close to the subject as you can and still keep it out of frame. Distance of light to background should be at least 2-3x the distance of light to the subject. Remember that light falls of inverse square. If the background is really far even a white wall can appear black.
The more distant your background is behind the plant, the less its texture will show, also shooting at a higher F stop will make the light fall off even more.
