Naaaaa.................I gave them an ideal place to thrive

Sorry to dig this up after a few days, but I had a very similar experience with fungus gnats that I traced back to the one EB in my tent. EB was totally infested.

I was planning to try my next run with a cover crop/mulch and no shower cap -- Was that your takeaway as well?

Well, this warm period is going to last a full week. Next change is Friday -Sat. night with a light freeze and 50% chance of snow,
So it's highs in the 70's and low in the 60s with HIGH humidity until then.

I guess my portable a/c utilizes the condensate to increase the efficiency on the condenser when in cool mode. When in the dry mode, it must just dump the condensation to the drain. I've had it on the dry mode for several days to keep the Rh down. I have noticed that I have to set the temp down one or two degrees to get the same temp in the tent.

With finally getting my 4x4 very stable, I hope I can get the same easily with the new Mars 2x4. It does have fewer provisions for cords and venting than my Gorilla.
I think I'll do something similar for intake air as I did with the 4x4. by not using the bottom vents and bringing in the air thru one of the drawstring vents with ducting to bring in better mixed air from the lung room. I'm probably gonna get bigger ducting for the 4x4 and swap the ducting to the new tent. I restricted the 4x4 inlet a little too much with the overkill 8in fan. A bigger inlet in the 4x4 will give me back a bit more control with the variable speed.
In the new tent, I think I'll keep my exhaust the same as it's currently assembled, but vented out the top. The side draw strings inlets are not at the very top for some reason. They should be at the top of that side of the tent, so it interferes less with the max hanging height of the light. It would be even better if they were at the top on the sides, but all the way back.......at least with a single bar light like the SP6500 or SP3000.

I had absolutely no gnat problem with the outdoor run EB. Now that could have been from the higher temps.
I'm fairly sure they came from my ewc and they were kept in check by the good bugs. If the ewc wasn't the source, the one change I did to under the cover gave them a good environment to thrive in.
I wasn't happy with the active mycelium growth when applying bokashi to the added compost at top dressings. The compost mites would just eat it up. To solve this, I added two empty small cans to raise up the cover and give the mycelium room to grow and get better established. It performed as expected and the growth was very good for a well established mat.
I'm now pretty sure that gave the gnats an optimal living and breeding environment......no matter where they came from.

I did knock them down with the application of the DE, but not out. I also just had to slow top water the other potted girls to get a better full watering. So today I'll take care of a little snipping here and there on the girls to neaten then up. Then it's just gonna snow on all the girls in the tent with a heavy dose of DE. I'm good with no more top dressings on any of the girls with the time left and the nutes I have banked. I won't really have to worry it crusting up.
The EB girl has drank her two gallons in three days, so I'll be good to carefully do a drench with Dr. Zymes before the DE application. Yeah, that will blow all my good bugs, but it won't matter much at this late stage.....probally two weeks.

In future EB grows, I guess I'll just use the cover with no cans creating a big area under the cover for them to safely thrive.

I don't know if having a living cover crop, sans cover, will help with the gnat problem or not. One could include some plants that repel them and NOT something gnats seem to be attracted by.
Another option could be to use some fermented garlic and/or plants that gnats don't like as a preventive.

Edit.......Yeah, I know that the mycelium is sort of like icebergs the vast majority of it is below the surface and I should be happy with any surface growth. Just a bit too much of that more is better attitude.

Thanks a lot for the added detail. I missed the bit about your cans, but that makes sense. I think I just had my top dressings (which included some fresh castings & bokashi) way too wet under the cover.

Good day my AFN friends. Looks like I need to shovel my way to the tent this morning.

This is after I shoveled a foot off of here yesterday.

Wow, that looks beautiful. Send some my way please!

That's what make sense in muh knoggin'!

With using the KNF, I do add liquid to the top. With the compost and other dry amendments, that high moisture level has a limited time. If that was the cause of the gnats, I'd think it would have started well before now.
Maybe it would be helpful for you if you raised the amount of compost you have piled on top, if you do that, incrementally, to avoid heating up, you should get a less moist top layer.

Merry Belated Christmas everyone! Apologies for my absence, the last month of work was insane, and I tested positive (with 3 jabs) on Christmas Day, so been getting it a bit tight here!

Loving that we breached 1000, to the moon growmies! :smoking:

Tent contents should be being hung this weekend. The last wait is always the hardest but I refuse to chop early this time, even if my house smells like 5-10…

hope you’re all staying happy and healthy, and that y’all’ve had time to relax be that in your own or with loved ones! Any other craic I’ve missed out on?

Just found out a friend passed last month from COVID-19 with 3 shots also. He had cerebral palsey and his lungs were not the best.
Not a super close friend, but a good friend nonetheless. His poor sister told me about it after trying to contact him. She's ,understandably, totally heartbroken. While pretty independent, there were things he just couldn't do and his sister was a large part of handling that.
He was just a good guy.

Good to hear ya made it thru it.

The last shoveling I did was at -34C. Not a lot of fun, and it did not last long. I don't have mitts that can handle -35. I must be getting old because I don't remember -35C being quite that brutal. :pighug:
