It took til this post til I remembered what the clay balls were! I was thinking like miracle grow nutrient balls but forgot they are the big ones used in hydro!

Expanded clay for me. (Drip system)
Easy to sterilize and reuse.
Holds enough water so the roots want to cling but drains well and pulls air to the roots.

When it gets a bit old I be add to soil or fill in gaps under the fence.

Is it just me or does anyone else have the overwhelming desire to take one of these right thru their eardrums whenever one of those damn Jennifer Coolidge commercials comes on?!?
