My grandpa actually enlisted late, I think he was 24 or 26 when he went to boot camp. I never really asked him why he enlisted. He married my grandma when he was 17 and she was 16, and he worked as a barber. He also had a kid on the way when he enlisted, and while he was in Korea my grandma lived in a trailer in base housing. She had a pictures of it, and it wasn't like a single wide, it was like an airstream trailer she lived in with my baby uncle.
He worked as a cook and a truck driver. I did ask him if he'd ever had to shoot at anyone, I didn't ask if he'd shot someone, just if he'd had to shoot at someone, assuming there is a difference, like shooting at a group in the distance vs someone up close. Anyways, he said no, but he did draw on someone, he found a north korean that had snuck onto the base.
