Hey Ya'll!

I got bored, so got all my growing equipment back out and started a new grow, learned a lot of lessons last time so hopefully i'll put it all into practise this time round.

My mistakes last time included but aren't limited to:
  • Too small a tent (2' x 2')
  • Too Weak a light, (and very noisy)
  • Over feeding & premixing feed which subsequently went bad
  • I got my light cycles all wrong, didn't understand the fundamental difference between auto's and PP's

So this time, my set up is as follows:

  • Tent - Mars Hydro 2' x 4' x 6'
  • Light - Mars Hydro SP250, this arrived last year damaged but i went with it anyway out of desperation
  • Temperature, i'm aiming to maintain 23°C with a combination of the mars hydro light, extraction and a small fan controlled by an inkbird, but i might have to upgrade the fan in time
  • Humidity isn't controlled but should sit comfortably between 40 and 60
  • My growing medium is compost called Cre (Irish for Soil i think), i grew in this last year and completely underestimated how much it contains in terms of nutrients.
  • Nutrients are Bio-Grow, Bio-Bloom and Top-Max
  • My intended nutrient schedule will follow the BioBizz recommendations and see how they go

Week 1 starts when they pop their heads above ground, maybe a week or so from now

For your perusal and delectation, i have some photos of the set up, lights are on 24hrs until i see some foliage. I don't like to risk breaking delicate roots on seedlings, so i'm taking a gamble and germinating them in the compost, these will be moved from the pint cups to larger pots as/when required, hopefully 3 - 4 weeks from now

Please feel free to comment and share your views!

How do you like the Inkbird product so far?

Nice set up  , how's the lighting so far?

welcome to the world lil sucker

one popped its head up overnight last night, about 2 - 2.5 days after sowing directly into the cre.

The light will stay on 24hrs until the other comes good, then i'm, debating whether to go for a 20/4 or an 18/6 cycle.

Another update, I've ordered more cre & 2x 15L airpots from my local retailer, these pots are new to me but ive read great reviews

Thanks for reading! as always, nuggets of wisdom are welcome!

Another day, another update, my second girl popped up yesterday and is looking well so were now on a 20/4 light cycle

My Cre soil and airpots arrived, on first impression the pots are decent quality, i filled the pots and will leave the soil to acclimatise for a few days before transplanting the girls into their final homes. maybe i'll invest in some mycorrhizae to help the transplant process, never used it before but ive read it really helps the soil health long term

You'll see my RH% is very low, i'm using those glass jars to try to keep the seedlings in a humid environment but i'm gonna have to think of a more permanent solution, anyone have a recommendation for a humidifier? or maybe a passive method for keeping it more moist?

Anyway, as always picture attached for your enjoyment, thanks for reading!

so far so good...

The soil in the airpots had warmed nicely so i took the opportunity to transplant both the girls, they look so tiny in those big pots, not for long! Maybe this was a little early but i don't think it'll do them any harm.

I lowered the light to 18" from the top of the seedlings to avoid any undue stretching

Re-calibrated my PH pen with buffers 4 and 7, its a year old but its giving good readings

After transplanting, i watered with a litre or so of plain water with a pH value of 6.5 and EC of about 0.1, the soil had dried slightly so i'll check before bed tonight to see how they're doing and whether they need a little more. Still avoiding any additional nutrients at this stage, i'll probably start that around the 10th may, that's 2 weeks into the grow.

unfortunately i couldn't get mycorrhizae locally, i'll order some online, i've read you can top dress if you add an inch or so of extra soil afterwards, i'll do this once the plants are a little taller.

Apart from that, my only issue is low RH, i'll have to invest in a humidifier if i can't sort it out in a more DIY fashion, maybe larger pots will improve the RH because i'm watering in larger volumes? time will tell.

The girls have taken well to their environment I think.

This is day 8 from sowing the seeds without prior germination. Since the last update, all I’ve done is plain water at pH 6.9 and try to maintain as high a RH as possible.

My tap water comes out at roughly 12C and pH 8 so a little warming and adjusting is required but it’s no biggy at this stage.

:snooze:

a few more days in now and some differences are beginning to show in the girls, the smaller one actually popped out first. Still just watering with plain pH 6.8 water.

I'm not really worried about its size at this stage, if it weren't for her bigger sister i'd assume she was absolutely fine, because she looks healthy to me. Time will tell how she compares

Thanks for reading!
