It's something to do with the red spectrum. This is probably wrong but, far red penetrates the leaf,red doesn't. So if it sees one and not the other it thinks it's being shaded and grows tall. If it sees both its not being shaded and stays squat. The unbalanced red spectrum in the ,as means they think all is good and don't need to go big. It's a tendency I like as the yield difference is minimal.
