Indoor Teetee's 2021 Monster Hunt

Hey, good to be back after a few months off.

It's the height of Summer here in this tropical part of the world..... ultra humid and temps way up in the 30°Cs during the day and no lower than 20° at night. It's gonna get mental hot in Feb and by mid March it starts to ease off.... not the best conditions for a grow!!

Problem is that our stock of bud will be finished by April, so I thought I should pull my finger out and get another grow on.

Given the excessive heat, I decided to grow some more photoperiod plants so I can have lights off during the day and try and keep those temps down a bit..... Teetee's back to the Dark Side.

My seed collection is dwindling a bit, I have some lovely classic Dutch Passion Autos like Lemon Kix, Banana Blaze, Blackberry Kush, Night Queen and some of their newer ones like Mokums Tulip, Mimosa Punch and Trichomes and Cream..... but I don't want to waste them by growing them in this current blistering climate.

I don't have many photoperiod seeds at all, just a few 4 year old Dinafem Gorilla and Purple Afghan Kush, some Dutch Passion Des Fran, and some freebies from Seedsman that I bought 8 years ago..... Jack Herer, Big Banger and OG Kush.

I grew some Gorilla and Purple Afghan Kush back in Dec 2018, and was very happy with the final product, the Des Fran was a tricky grow that went on forever, but my word, it's top drawer stuff.... it's also called 'Destroyer', and for good reason.

I wand a simple quick grow, so I selected one of each of the following.... Gorilla, Purple Afghan Kush and Jack Herer.

Last Sunday, I planted directly onto Coco soaked in pH 5.8 EC 0.7 nutes, covered in clingfilm and left in a dark warm spot.... in the tent was perfect. Yesterday (72 hours later) I checked on them and they had all sprouted, but as there was no light they were very pale.
Lights on 18 hours and off for 6, and today they look like this....

Judging by their size, the PAK came first, then Gorilla followed by the Jack Herer, remarkable seeing as I've had that seed since Sept 2014!!!

I plan to veg them for 28 days, flip to 12/12 and they should take 60 days in bloom. I'll repot them into 25L airpots around the 14 day mark.

I have no idea what I'm doing, so feel free to contribute and enjoy the ride!
Missed you bro! Glad to have you back.
The monster hunt continues!

Day 11 - Getting ready to repot
G'day, it's day 11 for my photo grow. I dunno about you but it's roasting here.

My babies are still in Solo cups, and I plan to repot them into 25L airpots on or around day 13. 13th letter of the alphabet and all that, ha ha.
Day 11 group1.JPG

Purple Afghan Kush (left), Jack Herer (top) and Gorilla (right).

Feed is EC 0.8, pH5.8, temps 28-30°C during the dark cycle (between 10am and 4pm to avoid the heat of the day) and about 30-32°C during lights on 18/6. You can see a bit of light curling of the leaves on the Gorilla which I put down to the heat.
Day 11 group2.JPG

To help with the heat, I've got a fan blowing on them, and a few re-purposed paperclips keep them standing up.

Not much else to report really, but if you feel like giving some pointers about topping, training and when to flip etc, chime in!

Well I've grown a couple unmanageable photos recently. I'd say veg for only 3-4 weeks. I went 6 weeks on the Jean-O's Devils Lettuce and both plants were just huge. I ended up cutting them early as they were toppling over and pulling the pots with them. Unless you top multiple times and really pull the branches out with training. It seems like 4 weeks is too short but wow do they explode with the stretch. Depending on your space, my first photo took up the entire 4x4 tent from wall to wall. The recent DL plants were filling over half of it and crushing my other two plants. They seem to be far larger than any of the autos I've run. With your penchant for ultra monster bushes I'd say keep that veg time short.

Flip at say 35 days? Depending on how they look of course. I defer as I feel you are a far superior grower than I.

Oh, how many tents are you running and how big is it?

Day 28 - Feelin' the heat
It's mental over here in the tropics... right now it's beautiful blue skies but somewhere out there in the Pacific, there's a few Cyclones brewing so it's gale force winds for us. And fuck me it's HOT.

In growing terms this means I'm dealing with tent temps way up in the 35-40°C range, and opening a window to let some cool air in is like sticking your face into an airfryer.

I had heat issues at this time of year in 2020, as described in post number 1 of this journal, and I'm still suffering PTSD from all that.

Having lights on 24 hours a day doing Autos just isn't feasible at this time of year, so I'm doing a quick Photoperiod run.
It's day 28 and here they are as a group...
day 28 Group 1.JPG

That's Jack Herer in front with Gorilla behind and Purple Afghan Kush on the right.

I repotted them at day 13. The PAK was the most developed, and she took to her new home very well.
Gorilla and Jack Herer must have got shocked, despite my careful handling, because they both stopped growing for a while.
I think they were repotted a day or 2 too early.

Jack picked up after a week, and is now flourishing....

Gorilla has been very slow since the repot....

She's looking OK but those new upper leaves are a bit twisty.

PAK is flying away though...

day 28 PAK 2.JPG

Lots of growth and plenty of side branches developing. I'll have to train those stems out a bit and give her a bit of a clear out underneath, maybe this weeknd (I think that's how the youngsters spell it these days...).

Well I've grown a couple unmanageable photos recently. I'd say veg for only 3-4 weeks. I went 6 weeks on the Jean-O's Devils Lettuce and both plants were just huge. I ended up cutting them early as they were toppling over and pulling the pots with them.
Blimey DC, thanks for that.... you scared me into flipping sooner rather than later

Now they've done 28 days (as of yesterday), I've decided to flip them (today), so I've adjusted the grow timer (I use a Harvest Master).
I had them on an 18/6 schedule in veg with lights on at 4pm and off at 10am. Now I've gone to 12/12 with lights on at 7pm and off at 7am. That means giving them 9 hours darkness tonight and onto 12 hours darkness from tomorrow onwards.

That should make the temps more manageable.
I dunno if I flipped the Gorilla and Jack Herer too soon, but the PAK needed it.
Oh, how many tents are you running and how big is it?
I've only got the one tent mate, 2m high and 1.2m wide/deep so they all had to flip at the same time.

There we go then, they are all 60 day finishers, so I'm expecting them to be done in the 2nd week of April.... I'm looking forward to seeing how these next few weeks go as they stretch and start flowering.

Thanks for taking a peek, see you next time!

Day 35 - Settling into flowering mode
Day 35..... Hot and sweaty.
Not because it's Valentine's day but due to it being Cyclone season over here.

A big one barreled down off the east coast and is now tearing apart New Zealand. That huge system's sucking hot air from the outback over to here, so it's sweltering up in the 35-42°C region during the day and not dropping below 30°C at night.

No way you can grow decent Autos in that heat so my decision to grow Photos is (so far) paying off.

Back on day 29, after 4 weeks of vegging at 18/6, I flipped the light schedule to bloom 12/12, so now lights go on at 7pm and off at 7am, giving me a few hours after 7pm to tend to them without disturbing the neighbours with the aquavac, or sending out beams of light from the gaps around the garage door.
Don't forget I'm dealing with Cops living 3 doors down, the neighbours over the road who sit outside their house every night (who's son is also a Cop), and the nosy old lady who's Daughter's an Army Officer. For. Fucks. Sake.

So after a week of 12/12, I'm seeing much less in the way of heat stress. Temps in the tent are still pretty frightening though, averaging around 32°C, lights on or off.

Here they are L to R: Jack Herer, Gorilla and Purple Afghan Kush.....
Day 35 group.JPG

Jack Herer is doing well after a slow start...
Day 35 JH 1.JPG

I put a few canes in to train out some of her branches, but she's got good structure and I haven't had to do too much with her really. (Jack identifies as female, so she is happy with my use of gender specific pronouns).

Looking inside at her main stem, you can see a good amount of space between each node, giving her room to let light in without me having to remove her fan leaves....
Day 35 JH 2.JPG

PAK is very active. I have had to remove her uppermost fan leaves a few times to let the new side branches get some light. That may have restricted her height, but now she's bristling with bud sites.
Some stakes again have allowed me to train out those lower branches, and here's how she looks from above...
Day 35 PAK 1.JPG

From the side you can see how much more busy she has been compared to Jack(ie)...
Day 35 PAK 2.JPG

I also gave her a bit of a clear out underneath, and you can see she's got loads of tightly packed nodes and good solid branches going on in there....
Day 35 PAK 3.JPG

Notice the total absence of fan leaf stems.

Gorilla is being more of a Pygmy Marmoset, but she's a very healthy little monkey so I'll let her live.... for now.
Day 35 G .JPG

I don't treat her very well really. I'll make up my 20L bucket of EC 0.8 pH 5.8 feed and water them all to run off.
The next day, with what's left, I'll (adjust the pH and) water the PAK and JH to run off again, and if there's anything left, I'll throw it at the Gorilla.... she's not drinking as much as the other two anyway, so (in my mind) it's just to keep the Coco pH in check.

House and Garden nutes don't have a separate Veg and Bloom, but I do add extra N in veg, which I drop in bloom, and add Bud XL and Bud Candy instead. I'll keep giving the same vegging mix until I see some established flowering. The N comes in handy building the flowering sites and supporting the stretch.

No sign of any flowering yet, but I haven't been looking very hard and my eyes are too blurry most of the time anyway ha ha.

More soon, thanks for popping in!

Day 40 - Getting ready to flower
Welcome back to the sauna. It's day 40 and still hot and sweaty over here.
how do you live and work in that!
Cold showers before work to lower my body temp just enough until I can get in the car and crank up the A/C.
Keep road rage to a minimum, and once at work I change my drenched clothes while in front of a big fan, while mopping off the rivers running down me... It just goes on from there.
Here they are as a group with Jack Herer in front, Gorilla behind and Purple Afghan Kush to the right....
Day 40 Group.JPG

Jack Herer looks huge.... she has such lovely structure with a nice long main stem. Each node has 2 big fan leaves with a side branch growing out above each one, and those side branches have grown out to the full width of the plant.

From the front she looks like this....
Day 40 JH 1.JPG

You can see the long stems and the simple elegant structure. She's stretching so I'll have to re-stake her once she's done with that, so I can maximise her flowering potential.

From above you can see how the light and air can get all the way through and how there's very little fluff growing internally....
Day 40 JH 2.JPG

I have a feeling that she's gonna be a beautiful plant once she's done.

The PAK looks smaller than the Jack.
Day 40 JH vs PAK.JPG

She's not.... under all those leaves is a stack of side branches.

The Jack has grown by herself unaided by me and I haven't needed to remove any leaves to let the light into the new side stems as they developed, like I've had to do with this PAK.
As I removed the main fan leaves from PAK, I noticed that I slowed down her overall height, and promoted the growth of further side branches. While Jack has long , simple side branches, the PAK has shorter, leafy side branches that have further side branches growing off them.

That means she's become quite the bush....
Day 40 PAK 1.JPG

From above you can see how the multitude of tops are struggling to poke through all those leaves....
Day 40 PAK 2.JPG

Now that I've looked at these pics, I think I'm gonna go in there this evening and get defoliating before she gets on with stretching. And maybe reduce the Nitrogen a touch. They are not as green in real life as the pics suggest, but I'm hoping that will slow down the bush factor.

Gorilla is very small, slow but not looking too bad considering...
Day 40 G.JPG

She's got good structure again, developing these feeble looking side branches.
I'm feeding her properly now, so maybe I'll get half an ounce off her in the end! She'll be my smallest harvestable plant of my career, but she looks pretty healthy. Bonsai buds!

See you in a week or so!

Sounds like a rough climate to work in, or do anything really. I can only imagine swimming in the pool or sea with such temperatures! :coffee2:

At least the plants don't seem to really care.. they look clean and spot on mate, well done! :hothot:

Cheers mate! :baked:
