New Grower Northern Lights Auto Flower Grow

Just got a digital humidity checker in the mail. Im @ 52% humidity so it looks like I need to increase that a bit prior to the seed being added to the dirt later 2night or 2mar.

It also has a digital thermometer and that is saying 78 degrees which is a bit cooler than my older thermometer.

This new thermometer/humidty checker thing I got has a probe thingy for "outside" temp/humidity - could I just stick that in the dirt to get a reading of the dirt as well?

The light itself has 2 exhaust fans that are blowing out the top of the cabinet. I also have another small fan that i bought to blow on the plant to help with its strength - that fan can also be used to suck new air in or blow hot air out depending on the position of the fan.

The cabinet is also not air/light tight so there is places where air can circulate.

I have nothing for smell control - the grow room is in an unused bedroom so if it stinks a little bit, no biggie. If it starts getting super stinky I can buy some carbon stuff down the road.
Ah ok that makes sense, just watch the temps as they go further into it's life and make sure it doesn't get burn. I made the mistake of putting too much light into my grow tent and it fried a couple plants.

I'm gonna be blunt, you'll go noseblind and won't smell it but the whole house will smell like it. The only strain I ever grew that didn't smell enough for a carbon filter was Dutch passion autoduck.
I tried not using a carbon filter and while I live in a legal state to grow, it still is like having a big sign plastered on your door "I'm growing weed, Rob my house please". And if you have nosey neighbours (pardon the pun) it could be game over.

All that said, I'm excited to share the journey you are going on. I'm still not a perfect grower and you probably will succeed more than me on your first grow (my first ones were so bad they were literally 5 to 6 inches tall but yielded me 7 grams. So even enough for one rocket is a good grow! :smoking:
Question - Once the tap root is formed and I put the seed into the soil, should I put a 20ox bottle over the seed for a "humidity dome" for a couple of days or just put the seed in soil and be done with it?
As @KREATURE saif, it's more a matter of preference. I put a cut up 16 oz water bottle botrom around it (just cut the bottle in about 2/3 and use the bottom half while it's sprouting and after about day 2 or 3 take it off. I do that because I use rapid rooters and place the seed straight from the breeder pack into the rooter without presoak or the likes. I've had 100% germination with rapid rooters. And because i dont want the rooter to dry out i keep the dome on. I also presoak my soil/grow medium till it's fully wet (about 5 minutes with a hose spraying lightly so as to not lose too many nutrients in the runoff) and let the pot sit for an hour to get to field saturation (the max point of retention of water by the medium without dripping out the bottom.

I'm a bit less worried about humidity/temps but I probably should be. My figuring is that some are grown in tropics with humidity, some such as Afghan derived strains are used to a harsher climate.

The hard part about planting is to not dig at the root to see if it's sprouted. That can stunt the plant (another reason my first grows were only 6 inches)

Does the outdoor probe read the ground moisture or just ambient humidity. If it's ambient then your digital temp/humidity metre is sufficent. If you mean one that broadcasts to a central point outside your tent (like I have one that broadcasts to my bedroom weather station) then why not? Then you don't have to keep opening the tent and chancing the possible cornea burn from the light if you check without grow glasses on.

Just be sure to check what I say against otgers, I have some bad habits others don't have.

I live in a state that allows unto 6 plants so I could care less what the neighbors think about any of it ;-) For future reference though, what is a good carbon air filter for a 2x2x4 space with one plant in it?

I just put a little humidity dome in the soil (keg cup) the humidity is at 69% but the temp inside is 85 which is a bit high - I will turn on the other fan and look for another small fan if I need to bring temp down further.

Day 2

Tap root said hello and the seed was planted into the Organic Roots 707 formula a couple of minutes ago.

Current Temp 77.7
Current Humidity 57%

I will leave the lights off until I see the little plant.
I will start feeding Fox Farm Big Bloom in a couple of days to help the roots

You in Cali too???

How much water should be given at each stage?

Seedling now, just a couple drops of water around the seed once or twice a day or?

How big is the plant when you do a normal watering? By normal I mean, let there be run off.

I’m re thinking my lights.

I have a 300w led that draws around 130 watts.
My grow room is 2ft by 2.5 ft or 5 sq ft.

I have one plant.

Do I need to make my grow room smaller so I have enough Watts per sq ft?

Maybe knock 6 inches off the width so I’m at 2x2 or 4 sq ft ?

Nah keep it like it is that away you have a bit more room then needed for ventilation ect. Since you are growing a single plant it’s not a deal breaker. Just be sure to train the plant and to not allow the side branches to end up to far outside of the direct lighting. I would recommend a second light down the road though. It doesn’t need to be a powerhouse I’d just go for around a 100w light with a fair amount of reds and just use it during bloom only while using the one you have now in veg and bloom. Just thoughts for down the road but like I said for this grow you’ll be fine anyway just keep the plat under direct light.

If the plant has sprouted and has been above ground for a few days I’d just do normal waterings... just pour however much water you need to saturate the soil and then repeat when the soil dries. You don’t want to baby the plants and keep them moist 24/7 you want the pots to dry out and to encourage more root growth to seek out the water ect. Once they’ve done sprouted that taproot starts going downwards though so it’s not like keeping a seed moist in the top later it’ll be fine if the top layer dries out some.

Worst comes to worst your plant droops a little bit from being thirsty and perks back up 30 min later after receiving the water. I most definitely prefer underwatering to overwatering because they bounce back much quicker. Overwatering can take a while to correct on the other hand.

Also typically aim for 10-15% runoff give or take...

when the plant is sprouting and still getting situated you do want to water the top layer more often to ensure it doesn’t dry out but like I said after a couple days above ground that taproots already working its way down.

Just a cheap 4” filter... personally I’d recommend this Amazon product Amazon product

If you want to go smaller you may need to attempt a DIY homemade filter but those cheaper filters work fine I use a 4” filter on a tent that’s 8 square foot. They last 3-5+ grows it just varies but when a small grow like that it should last a good while for 40$. I’d recommend only running them during mid flower up to harvest as that’s when the smell starts to get a bit loud. During veg and early flower you can just run the inline alone without the filter.

If you can’t see the Amazon links open up web view.
