They act pretty similar.
If I were to use some sort of automated watering device, it would probably be the carrot and some drip tape. The way I run earth boxes and the way I would run a system with a carrot, I have a dry down period. In an organic soil set up, I think a dry down. Is necessary for optimal health.

I agree. It is best to establish a wet and dry cycle.
