Side by side grows with clones is a lot of work and given my small sample size it really is statistically insignificant. The thing is if you are not using all of the vendors products how will you ever know if you have achieved or not the best possible results? I can tell you that after watching hundreds of new growers on many web forums, the ones with the highest number of problems are the ones that mix and match their own nutrients. They seem to think they are smarter than the PHds that formulate the vendor's lines. They also seem to need to reinvent the wheel. Then when through no fault of their own the plant finishes and gets them high they are proven correct. I know this all too well. Some 40+ years ago I started growing flowers and vegetables "Organically" for sale at a roadside stand. My plants made fruit and flowers but by the end of the growing season I had made little or no money. It took me several years to understand that quality and yield were the kings of making a success of it all. I have taken that lesson indoors to my pot farm. Quality and Yield divided by inputs are the top measures of success in my farm. My plants are tops (as rated by my stoner friends) for quality. I am getting yields of 1.5g/watt now in my rockwool drip system. This is not my best. That came with DWC at nearly 2g/watt in a winter time grow. The problem with DWC is the really high temperatures I need to deal with in the summer here. DWC can be done in the heat but it takes a toll on both quality and quantity when it gets too hot.
Tell me about it. The heat surely was and is still my biggest issue. I don't know if I want to strive to be a master grower and try to grow the 'best' weed. That seems like a hard thing to do. I know I do want to get to the point where I consistently grow high quality dense and tasty buds to personally enjoy, and share with a couple buddies.
This is truly just a hobby for me, which is why I think the hobbyist level nutes resonate so well with me. I have had pretty low expectations with this grow based on how things started, , viewing it as a learning experience, but am now more and more hopeful that it will exceed my initial expectations. That will be awesome for me for a first time.
My goal with the second will be to just be better and hopefully get better results. Trying to keep expectations and goals reasonable for now.
