Photoperiod First Photo Attempt: Green Crack and Bubba Kush

WEEK 7 Update

Hey everybody,

The plants are now 7 weeks old, and I'm gonna let 'em go for another week or so before flipping to flower.

Growth has definitely been healthy, and they're really enjoying the 600ppm nute solutions. I think the Green Crack probably wants ~625,ppm and the Bubba Kush might prefer ~575ppm, but they seem to be happy enough with the 600ppm compromise.

I also had a bit of a dumb-dumb/eureka moment and realized why these plants are so short.... the friggin Blue RapidLED. This thing has always been at maximum power while my HLG QB's are dimmed to around 50%. I'm only just realizing the Blue puck doesn't really register much on my lux meter, so I've been thinking "oh well, my lux/ppfd is in order... good enough". In retrospect, these plants have been just getting blasted with too much blue light, hence their stature and heavy-greenness. I unplugged the blue puck around a week ago and I'm already noticing them getting a little taller. On my next grow, I think I'll put this light up higher in the tent, maybe above my QB's, that or invest in a dimmer.

I also did a pretty heavy handed shaping/defoliation this week. I figure 'in for a penny, in for a pound' lol. On my next grow, I think I'll do virtually no pruning until it's time to stretch. Shoutout to @Suki813 for her awesome pointers.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with the shape of the Green Crack. It looks pretty cool

The Bubba Kush is more of a bastardized version, but she's come a long way too. She'll have two main colas trained with three primary tops each. A little less symmetrical than the GC, but we'll see how this goes!

The time to flip these to flower is fast approaching. The Green Crack is ready now, but I'm going to push it a few more days to try to get the Bubba Kush to grow a little bigger. There's a thin line here though were I'm afraid if I'm not careful, the Green Crack will be too big. What do you all think? 2 more days? @Suki813 @Death The Cultivator

How tall are they? As long as you've got the headroom to accommodate stretch you should be fine imo.

Bubba is an indica dominant, though indica vs sativa is a misnomer, it's not going to get very tall compared to the GC. I'd plan for GC to stretch around 3x what you have now compared to the BK that will probably hit around 2x. Super cropping is an option to keep the canopy even but I do think you are good to go to 12/12

How tall are they? As long as you've got the headroom to accommodate stretch you should be fine imo.

GC is around 13” tall, and 24”x24” wide horizontally. BK is around 11” tall and 18”x18” horizontally.

I have around 3 feet of vertical space to spare to keep at least a foot separation from the lights. I think I’ll give em another 48 hours then make the switch. Tent is 2x4x6 feet.

And @Death The Cultivator , this could very well be an opportunity for me to try out super cropping with the GC. I’ll cross that bridge if need be.

So I just ruined my Bubba Kush

Honestly one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done. I was defoliating and getting them ready for the switch to flower. All good with the Green Crack, but then as I was snipping a fan lead in the Bubba Kush, I accidentally snipped a main growth tip of the BK (1 of 6 branches). This could have been saved, but for some stupid reason I panicked and immediately snipped the other 3 branches to keep just the two main ones in some misguided effort to keep things symmetrical.FML. One of the biggest regrets ever.

Im so sad. Part of me wants to just chuck the BK and focus on the GC. I’ll probably leave it as some kind of bastard science experiment to see what happens when you literally remove all but two growth tips from an 8 week old plant. I suspect I can still get 2 beefy buds from it, but I think I’ve destroyed my chances at getting a good yield from the BK.

Is it worth keeping at this point or should I just focus on the GC?

I’m inclined to leave it for another few days before flipping, at least get to the 60 dark mark of veg.

like I said,I’ll probably let it finish as a science experiment.

I hate when people defoliate, your plants didn't need to be manicured as they looked perfect. The most you probably needed was to wait until week 2-3 of flower and bottom prune and open up the middle a bit to minimize the chances for mold.

You could go a few more days for sure now but it isn't a huge mistake or anything, some like schwazz to that degree. She still looks healthy as well but I can't speak on yield though.

She should be fine. I made the same mistake with my photo girls my first time and they still produced. Give her a few extra days before flip, just don't take anything else. She'll throw more tips once you flip as well so I definitely wouldn't trash her.
