Indoor First grow - Autoseeds Dream Berry & Auto Pounder

Alrighty. Just gave both plants 100 sprays each, as per @912GreenSkell 's advice. The topsoil looked much closer to something that plants would wanna grow in afterwards. Really hoping to see signs of life soon - the taproots were so good on both I'd hate to have lost them to underwatering...

Update and pics as things develop!

I had some that took 4 days to break the ground.

This run I kind of thought 100 spray twice daily was a little much, so I eased back to 50 and one morning I slept in, and the pots in the stream of the fan dried out a little too much and I lost a couple of seeds to underwatering. But remember that my climate is fairly hot(85 degrees) and very dry(25-30% RH), so my rate might not be the same as your own. For a beginner presoaking medium is likely a better way to start them, and many grow vets ay question my technique. My theory is a loose non soaked medium offers extremely easy root penetration, and the root expand while searching for moisture. All theory though, and quite possibly(not quite possibly, more like most definitely) from the mind of a semi-crazy stoner...lol

Well, I'll give the 100 sprays 2x a day schedule a few days and see where it gets me. The topsoil has definitely been bone dry until now - there has been a moist patch under the cups I have over the seeds, but that's been it as far as soil moisture between sprayings. Right now I'm just dying to see even one of the two break the surface - the dreamberry got such a strong start right in the paper towels that I'm hoping it shows itself soon despite being a bit dryer than it should have been.

Put a clear plastic cup over them and your pot will not dry out so fast

Yep. One step ahead of ya. :d5:

That's good to know. I can get so wrapped up in timelines based on other grows I've seen here on the site that I tend to forget that they're plants with their own schedules, and that I should chill out a bit already. Or, as my friends in my previous hobby used to say when a brewing project wasn't going quite as planned - "Relax, Don't Worry, and Have a Home Brew!"

Smart that should keep the soil from drying up..

We have lift-off! Day one for the Auto Pounder. There was a teeny tiny bit of green just pushing through the dirt this afternoon when I gave them their first spritz for the day, but now she's standing tall. These suckers move fast!:biggrin:

Now, if that damn Dream Berry would catch up. I'm excited to try the Auto Pounder, but the Dream Berry is the strain I *wanted* to try!

Well, dang. The Dream Berry didn't make it. :frowny:

When I opened the tent to spray them earlier I noticed that the little Auto Pounder sprout was going strong but the Dream Berry still hadn't broken the surface, so I decided to do a bit of (very careful!) excavation to see exactly what was going on.

Here's what I think happened:

As mentioned earlier in the thread, when I germinated the beans the Dream Berry popped super quick while the Auto Pounder took quite a bit longer. Because I wanted to pot them up at the same time, I waited for the Auto Pounder to catch up which meant that the Dream Berry was far enough along that it had a huge taproot and had actually begun to shed it's seed coat. And since I didn't want to hurt the taproot, I made the initial hole in the potting mix a little deeper than it should have been - so while I thought I was helping, I might have suffocated it as the cotyledons were essentially ready to rock and suddenly got stuffed back under a bunch of dirt and couldn't find any light. I'm also pretty sure I tamped down the soil a bit after I placed the Dream Berry. In my mind I knew that was probably gonna come back to bite me...but new grower, excited, etc. Live and learn.

So yeah. To any fellow newbie growers that might be reading this:

1. If you're germinating more than one bean at a time, *don't wait* for them all to pop before you plant them. Just get em in the dirt.
2. Don't plant too deep and don't tamp down the soil. It's just not necessary.
3. If you screw something up, just take a breath and do what you can to fix it. You can always get more seeds.

So sorry for your loss! But you do have some life! I plant my seeds and start the misting process as soon as there is a 1/8" tail. 1/4" deep has worked well for me. Good luck to you!

Eh, it happens. Got a new Dream Berry germinating now, so hopefully it'll be ready to plant by tomorrow.

Anyway - here's a baby picture of the Auto Pounder. Four days old!

Not much to report for today's update. Trying again on the Dream Berry - planted the second seed I germinated and got it in the tent. Temps and humidity have been holding at right around 77F & 50-55% so I decided to kick on my second light. It brought the temp up to 84F and dropped the humidity to 35%. I'm gonna see if kicking the humidity in the room up a bit does anything to get the tent a little closer to where I had it but if that's where it stays I'm alright with it.
