Indoor A layer on the bottom of the pot?

I used to just cover the holes w/ shards of clay and fill the pot w/ dirt but I always found my pots stayed too wet on the bottoms and I use really loose soil ... I've replaced the bottoms of my pots w/ an air pot base ... thanks for the input ... I'm exploring the packing peanut idea for a friend ...

yes, it is the big hole in the bottom of the terracotta pot which caused people to take old broken pots and layer them on the bottom to prevent good soil from leaking out. It's not unusual for the surface of my soil to stay bone dry through most of the grow. If I water until the surface is wet the bottom down by the roots will always be too soggy and never air out. Improved drainage is acheived by using soil with different sized particlles.
