New Grower 1st hydro grow

it jist seems weird to me that of i have 10 to 15 gallons of water to dump all of it every week.but im off Friday ill dump the dwc bucket nd clean again......i wont use the control bucket nd res until late veg when she starts drinking a lot seems like a waste of nutes

Some of us don't do the weekly reservoir changes.
My past several grows I've never changed them, and the plants do great.
I do empty out about 3% per day for testing, and do use clorox daily.

Even that might be unnecessary work, and I'll be NEVER CHANGING, and not even emptying out the 3% daily for a 2-plant grow.
If Autopot users can do this, and dirt growers don't change out their dirt mid-grow, it seems like we hydro users can do the same.
The trick might be to have small enough reservoirs that the plants use a significant fraction of the plant reservoir fluid daily.
That would mean a fresh batch of balanced fertilizer every day added to what's left.

I'm trying a 10 gallon tote, filled halfway, made into a 2-plant reservoir.
The float valve is inside the plant reservoir instead of the bottom bucket of a 2-bucket controller.
Plant root interference with the float valve might be a problem, but root pruning can probably solve it.

If this works it will be easier than dirt.
And if it doesn't I'll have wasted some seeds.

using bleach concerns me. i do think once shes established if shes drinking lets say half a gallon a day i only have 3 gallons so in 6 days shes drank everything i should only have to fill there wouldnt be a chsncr for algae to take over.....im gonna try using hydroguard and pondzyme for now instead of a sterile rez but maybe next time someome can explain it to me

I had a makeshift plastic shield protecting the float valve from the stray roots, but yeah it isn’t fool proof. If you aren’t going away for a week. You should be able to keep an eye on that. I still can’t understand how not having the float valve in the reservoir works to keep the water at a constant level in any case, but hey I am a little high!
the controp bucket and the dwc hucket are connected by a tube they will maintain the same level since they are connected. if the dec bucket statts losing water rhe control hucket also goes down which causes the flowt valve to also go down making the rez autofill

Got it. Makes sense. I wouldn’t want to change all those buckets weekly either. I bet Simplicio’s comment is music to your ears!

I guess the roots look okay, but I don’t like the looks of the plant. She just doesn’t look happy.

im doing all i can here lol

You sure are, man. I don't know what else you can do at this point. It may be the stress she went through before she sprouted and the early rock wool peeking. It may just be a bad seed, after all it is nature and each plant is different. I have grown some tiny plants next to normal; sized plants of the same strain before. Sometimes it is how it goes. You have to ask yourself, do you push through with weekly water changes and maintenance. I see pros and cons. On one hand, you will learn a lot from growing her out, on the other, she likely won't yield much with everything she has been through and where she is now.
