well strains may vary here and there and not all are going to react as well as others when pushed especially
i have shown side by side comparisons that a 24/0 in veg can easily outgrow a plant of similiar nature 20/4 in a variety of strains
it is us that needs the rest more than the plant
we think it needs rest because it exhausts the "buffer" in ph we have faster do to an increase in exchange rates, goes through water faster which concentrates nutrients more altering ph faster potentially increasing buildup due to plant needs possibly lending in a cascading effect and will excell nutrient burn if mix was alittle hot it gets hotter and shows signs of needing a rest but if proper needs are met than the plant will thrive
as an overall example in one week of 24/0 you add more than an entire day of growth at 20/4
take a five week veg cycle to be easy 20 =700 24= 840 as this example it has the benefit of almost an entire week of growth compaired to the other time possibilities
but people think they can work the plants the same regardless of what they choose and it is not the case
if a plant had to have a night cycle to produce roots than i would always have a bunch of dead seedlings and juveniles roots will grow in course w/ new development of leaf for every leaf there are specific roots grown to accomidate them yes leaf and root grow during dark period but clearly not only during dark period
w/ auto's it is usually a race from seed to accomplish the largest plant possible before it starts sexing is my goal from seed to weed i feed
i cut hours of light after flowering is in full swing during maturation honestly more to do w/ the pocket book of electricity during veg seeing as it takes about twice the electricity to do auto's compaired to photos if running 24/0 and the yield issue usually discussed is minute overall really compaired to the fact rarely are plants grown under "perfect" conditions and are limited by what the weakest point in "OUR" game is that we give them
now that being said sometimes i need to water twice a day depending on the container and plant size and medium needs to not over saturate but give enough to really swell

the general rule of thumb while learning to grow is wattering till you get around 10% runoff to ensure harmful buildup is cleansed
but this is done even if it is not needed just because it is a good rule of thumb to go by
but truthfull this stresses the plant because each time you reach the point of the runoff you have already saturated the soil to the point it lacks oxygen and the plant has to wait for the conditions to readjust each time technically slowing growth and each time clense reducing the amount of partially broken down organic compounds(from more complex chain harder to break down organics depending on nutrients used and source of them) that could have been more easily used if not flushed through alot of chemical nutrients are instantly available and do require a more aggressive stance on salt buildup but in a case like this i would rec premium gas for premium performance when expected
but this is mainly due to the addition of too much at one time in alot of cases
i only encourage runoff a few times in a entire cycle for full development sometimes more depending on the nutrients used organic or synthetic
depending on development and needs once during seedling/juvenile transition once during preflower and reduction in verticle height growth after mixing ratios of bloom and grow depending on the limits of the setup and desired effects wanted
depending on your R/H and plant needs as compaired to volume of medium used it can take a few hours heck the better part of a day w/ some mediums just to readjust the medium while the plant needed this nutrient time if lights were on after wattering it would have to draw from stored energy only increasing stress
a plant during a dark cycle can only use gathered energy to produce results
a plant during a light cycle is using and storing energy depending on the plants specific needs at a given time
the larger the pot and the smaller the plant this can take even longer but the larger the plant and the smaller the container the less time this will take of course
so that being said to be simple if it takes just an hour for sake of discussion each time to readjust and you watter twice a week during a ten week cycle that is an entire day behind not including the real compounding ramifications of other things effected like damage to beneficial bacteria cultures if they are used
w/ that little bit of thought it is quite easy to see how many end up weeks behind schedule when the time are all added together w/ quite possibly issues maybe not even seen
now that being said 10% runoff every wattering is a good rule of thumb till one is able to up their game to the next level
this isn't even touching on the topic of breeding and if you didn't sex under 24/0 you can not truely "guarantee" it is an autoflowering trait for sure you are passing on and not a more photo sensitive trait

but i rambled enough and went in enough general dif dir in the post as usuall but it all applies in the end:)
uhhh so yeah i do 24/0 till sexing then reduce it to 20/4
this run i have some very similiar phe's and the one under 20/4 was quite smaller than the others and it was larger than most when cracked
it is back under 24/0 and nutrient w/ the rest due to lack of interrest in thread and didn't want to waste the potential i know the plant is capeable of also pushing w/ a foliar feed just to the point of no return:)
i planned to run it at a 24/8 this time to compair the dif of yield results for my own fun but it is only one plant so many(myself included) won't consider it much of a test but if any results vary i will push towards the better of course in the end game
right now i am looking for the inbetween to save electricity running costs but push yield and ripening time in the balance w/ eachother if i save 15-20 days on average i can almost fit in another
entire crop w/ the time so aside quality of smoke and final yield weight per area used
ie 52 weeks roughly 5 ten week cycles
if one was content to harvest just a week and a half earlier of the 10 weeks around 8 1/2 week mark one could fit an entire grow in the time recouped in one perfect year:)
now i am using varieties that i don't tend to amber very much to help
but even if one increased yield a ounce per grow to be easier for numbers in the extra time of 10 week it is only an increase of overall yearly yield of around 5 zips
well that extra can be easily beaten introducing a full extra grow
so what is the reason to push light schedule is the real answer to the question at hand:)
ramble ramble ramble:)lots to ramble about

Well, as a new grower, I've had the chance to experiment a little bit. I originally started out with the 16-8 schedule and my biodiesel mass did Ok, but not great. About 3 weeks ago, I switched to the 20-4 schedule and she went nuts with new growth. I can't tell ya whether it was the schedule change or her, but I'm sticking to the 20-4 from now on. ;)

Like Duggy I'm also running 24/0. I'm using led and my temps drop rapidly when lights are off.
as they say...
would love to switch to 20/4 but I think, I only can do in summertime...

Hi,

just by accident I today saw that my lights ran 20,5/3.5 all the time...won't change it :)
But hey, that should have been 20/4, so I voted for that.

Cheers

Nobody does 19/5???,lol I guess the weird, odd numbers scare people..I veg 24/0 for first 14-16 days under MH.On the day I go 19/5, I switch to HPS.The plants 1st experience of darkness, is matched with the 1st exp' of HPS light.I have seen my auto's ,any strain.Including Barneys Sweet Tooth, trip to flowering aggressively when I use this method.Mang I'm high...:bong:

Including darkness when changing light cycles or other stuffs "prevent" to a degree stressing the girl....

its 1 of those thing which we all do to suit ourselves i usually go with 18/6 cause in my mind (its really dark and lonely in there) plants need that dark night sensation for growth i may be wrong but i don't think it hurts in any way

i may be wrong but i don't think it hurts in any way
thats not science at all :D

naa sry, but as far as I know, in darkness rootgrowth is extended. so vegi would benefit from it, but on limited potsize rootgrowth will stop anyways.

Currently I am using 12/12 as it is less electricity waste. Everytime the sun comes out however it gets a nice sunbath think that helps a lot and I can almost hear the plant sing from joy :)

12/12 for an Auto? if so yeild wil be affected quite alot min you realy want is 16hrs but only on selected strains
