Outdoor The trails and tribulations of a first time grower [journal]

Here's some pictures to stare at. Think different at 9 weeks, grown with no artificial light and in full soil. She's not that big, but she is covered with budsites. Starting to think on getting a loupe to look at her trichomes. Also, I'm starting to notice the lower fanleaves are becoming slightly lighter. There are also one or 2 yellow ones already. I guess this the beginning of her taking the energy from the leaves to mature her flowers? She is now on 2ml of biobizz fish mix, 3ml bloom and 4ml of top max.
What is the definite answer of the jury: look at the trichomes to know when to harvest, or watch for the yellowing of the leaves that come out the buds to know when to harvest?

I much rather go on flower development than leaves.
Leaves can wilt or wither or be strong and green for reasons other than flower development.

If using a loupe is too much trouble, for many years (and still now, mainly), I rely on calyx and pistil situation.
About 75% brown pistils is nice for me. Kind of equates to some clear trichs 20%, mostly cloudy 75%, a few ambers 5%.
Others go for maybe 90% brown pistils. More like mostly cloudy 80%, some amber 20%.
Once all pistils are down, then it may continue to bulk for a while, but THCA and CBA etc are mainly degrading at that point.

Numbers for trichs are going to vary, but something like that.
The pistils will first brown / wilt, but after that the calyx size continues to grow.
So the calyxes with just wilted pistils and calyxes with pistils wilted for a week or two differ a lot.

My 75% brown pistils gives more a "high", energizing, uplifting, which is what I like.
Others tend more to a "stone", heavy, calming, relaxing, narcotic.
Of course each strain will vary a fair bit.

What you can do is: harvest in 2 or more stages, some earlier, some later.
Keep the buds separate, and test smoke separately, to feel what degree of maturity works best for you.

Love and hugs,
MJS

So, @mariasanchez, what about these pistils? No loupe here, will order one tomorrow. She's 10 weeks today, and my feeling is she's days away from harvest. I would aim 90% milky trichomes, and 10% amber for the high I like. I think the main colla is about there, the side branches are nearly there. But this is just my feeling. What do you think?

11 weeks today, and I think she is ready to go to ganja heaven, and her fruits will be laid to rest in my jars. I wanted to harvest a couple of days ago, but since we are having a good spell of sunshine here, I thought to leave her a little longer so the side branches could fatten up a bit.
Things have also not been helped by the fact that I broke my collar bone last week!! So the setting up of my dry tent (secret jardin ds60 with fan and carbon filter) has been delayed, or spread out over a couple of days.
It is ready now and the harvesting will be taking place tonight.
Here are some pictures pre harvest. She has gotten nothing but water for the last week and a bit. I have to say, those Dutch passion genetics are spot on time. Thanks for all the help @TheMongol @mariasanchez @fryge @912GreenSkell and all the rest I forgot to mention!

Nice and fat, well done!!

Hi all, sorry if updates are a little slow. I can only type with one hand with my broken collar bone.Last week I harvested my first ever plant!!
I harvested in 2 stages: first to go was the main colla, and about 4 to 5 days later I harvested the remaining 4 side branches. After harvest I trimmed everything liberally because I don't want to waste any frosty little leaves. I then put everything in my dry tent and have yesterday removed the first batch to a glass jar for curing. I did this because the stems broke when I tried on the first time, so I guess this means they are ready for curing. Must say they felt a little dry, so I added one bud that was not fully dry to the jar to spread the moisture evenly and compensate. All in all, I got 158gr from my first plant wet weight. I read this will come down about 70%, so that will leave me with around 50gr of dried bud. I'm pretty pleased for a plant that was in full soil, 48cm high and got about 9 to 10 hours of sunlight (when there was sun). ( see first pictures)

I have 2 more think differents going now: one is 5 weeks and 5 days and a little less than 2 weeks into flower. It is also rather little (about 45cm), although I transplanted using @912GreenSkell 's no transplant instatransplant pot in pot method. It was uprooted almost fully when it was about 2 weeks old, and dried a little because this happened on a dry day, so I guess this contributed also to it's size.
The last one I have for this season is 2 weeks old now and I transplanted her to the outside yesterday using the instatransplant pot in pot method. She is doing well, especially since we are having a crazy good spell of sunshine for almost 3 weeks now with temps around 28 to 30° everyday.

Talking about the weather: my photoperiod frisian dew is having a little trouble with the extreme heat and is taco'ing, has a bunch of yellow leaves and some discolored tips. Is this heat stress? (last pictures)

I also have this other weird plant which I'm going to make a new tread about, because it's, well.... weird.
