Day at the spa (groomer) before and after. If you're considering a Shih Tzu, remember that you'll be either making a commitment to take them to the groomer on a regular basis, or brush them VERY frequently. As cute as they are in long hair, rag mop lookin' mutt mode, I just like their Ewok lookin' faces too much and hate the constant brushing too much to let him grow out.
