Outdoor Seed and Breed Early Garden

NL and Afghani are doing well so far. NL definitely is further along for being almost a week old.

Weather should stabilize in another week or so, and I'll put them in the raised beds.

Plants are all starting to take off a bit. The Rudys are bouncing back from getting beat up by raindrops the last couple of days, and the NL and Afghani are enjoying some sun and getting ready to be transplanted to the raised bed later this week.

Raised bed soil is running a little alkaline, hovering just under or over 8 depending on the day. Just added 1/4 cup of powdered sulfur to the 15sf bed to hopefully bring it down into the 6.5-6.8 range. Found a very useful calculator at https://garden.org/nga/calculators/index.php

Other than that, waiting on my 4/20 order of Auto Lemon and Auto Blueberry from Seedsman to show up, and contemplating germing my Sensi Ruderalis Indica as an alternate pollen source.

Hope everyone is enjoying Spring so far ✌️

NL and Afghani are in the ground. Hoping they'll take off, both looked a little hungry in the starter cells.

Rudys are starting to take off a bit too. Should be a good weekend of growth

I thought I saw nuts on my strongest Rudy and upon closer inspection they were aphids :face: hosed them all down with neem oil to keep the pests at bay. The one that looked male also happened to be the strongest plant of the bunch, and I'm hoping that I'll discover pollen sacs on it soon.

Everything in the garden is loving the warm weather and sun. All of the girls had leaves up in worship this afternoon ☀☀☀

Interesting to see the structural difference between the NL and the Afghani. NL is taller and further along with leaf sets, while Afghani is shorter with a thicker stem and broader leaf pattern. Can't wait for these girls to grow up a bit.

The strongest Rudy officially has balls!

How long should these develop before I chop it? I'd like to harvest the pollen and do the polinating myself.

Looks like the 2nd strongest is a female, and the final two could go either way at this point. Will polinate one of the females from this group if only to have more seeds.

If you can't isolate the male, you can simply cut the plant and put it inside or somewhere by a windowsill.
Put some tinfoil or a paper plate under him to catch his pollen.
Pollen sacks open pretty fast.
Make sure you catch the pollen before any rain or moisture hits it and kills it.

Even after spraying with neem oil, I'm still discovering aphids on my plants. Luckily it's only been a couple, and I'll have some ladybugs roaming shortly.

Rudys are showing tall and lanky or short and compact so far. Getting 5 fingered leaves on a couple now. Excited to see how they progress once we get through this week of rain.

NL is doing well. Plucked an aphid off of it and it's already starting to rub scent off on my fingers. Afghani is not looking too hot, I'll keep it going and may cull it if it doesn't start perking up.
