I've been reading a lot about organic mixes on other forums and a lot of the PHd stoners have been saying peat is superior to coir due to a few reasons. I guess when making an organic mix it needs to be tailored to either peat or coir, though to be fair I use both :D:

Still lots of reading to do, not sure on this.

Thanx for your response Mr Piggy,I am using coco coz i have loads of it and i hate waste. Also peat retains a lot of water which replaces oxygen in the medium.
Ive got peat in the potting compost, also loam which im told cannabis plants love.i appreciate your input,i will do some more research on peat though.

I need to shovel a few buckets of volcanic basalt sand/dust into buckets the next time I visit the toodle river in washington. When Mount St. Helens blew it coated the entire region in ash, but the river banks coming down from the mountain have pure ash lining them still. It's amazing standing on the edge of that crater and looking down in, knowing that at any moment that active volcano could take my life on a whim. It's not often an Atheist faces that kind of awe inspiring power or feels that powerless :D:

Great idea Mr Piggy.I was thinking of Mt St Helens when i saw this stuff.
Its heavy for the volume it takes up,so you dont want to be humping it too far.
The power of nature is awesome! It rules all our lives,im an atheist too.

Are you guys having any pest problems with promix? I'm using roots organic and it came with thrips. Looking for a good base soil, any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

As far as I know Pro-mix is sterile. It may have picked something up while in storage where you purchased it.

It's always a good idea to check for holes in the bags and ensure the mix hasn't been sitting around for awhile (especially outside).

I thought I was safe because my guy stores everything indoors and he is a huge commercial grower, so I thought he would know what's up with proper soil storage and all :\

What a let-down. Thanks for the input, tho, guys!

I'm growing auto flowers and with organics only no chemicals iv found that slow release nutrients like fish meal, Kelp meal, Alfalfa meal. And so on give me amazing results I've never seen autos grow like that before. I've also noticed sap pockets formed all over the main stalk and the nugs have three times the resin production and triple the yield. Has anyone else experienced this before.

Hi, can anyone tell me what top dressing is and how it is to be done with guanos ?

I haven't had a lot of sap pockets but I usually get a good yield and healthy plants... To me, the difference is in the smoking. I can grow herb for more yield with bottled stuff but, when I used to grow that way, the final product never smoked as well.

Hi, can anyone tell me what top dressing is and how it is to be done with guanos ?

Top dressing usually refers to a layer of mix placed on the surface of your main grow mix. This is usually done to allow you to start seeds in the same pot/bag that they will finish in. When it is used for this purpose, you are trying to allow the seeds to get started in a neutral, ph'd mix... no ferts, since they can burn seedlings. So, the top layer... maybe 3"-5" deep should be something like pro-mix or a seedling mix that allows the roots to reach down into the TLO as they grow.

So, to be clear, if you top dress for seedlings, you do not want to put guanos (or any other ferts) in the top dressing.

:peace:

Cheers for the info buddy. I'm doing my whole grow in seedling organic soil with perlite and nothing else for the first two weeks (i.e. no top dressing, added a little basic ferts, micronutrients etc. continued watering and added some guano tea a week ago. The lady looks fine to me.
