i received a sample in the mail yesterday...instead of a 5lb's it was 2oz.
Sorry pher, I put it out there as quick as I could. I did get 5lbs but I guess we wore that thing out pretty quick. Oh well, at least you got some. :peace:

See the difference between the ripped egg shell and the ripped cuttlefish..much finer powder.
Yeah, I see that. I'm not sure exactly how I would use the powder. I honestly don't know enough about absorption rates but I would check into it a bit before I used the powder the same way I would the eggshells. I could see the powder possibly being caustic if it were applied in the same rates as the egg shells... Phreedom_man, Zy, or DIRT would come a lot closer to knowing the answer to that than I would. :peace:

I expected the little one and got the 5lb-er. Now I just got to figure out how to use it. :D

.Im in the process of putting together some ingredients for my first attemt at TLO.I came accross Volcanic rockdust,by Verve at my local
B&Q store here in the UK.It is Basalt volcanic rock, and contains feldspar, pyroxene, horneblende, chlorite and magnetite.Ive checked these out and they mostly contain
silicas of different types. It increases micro activity and is supposed to increase yields.Says 100% organic and has trace minerals.
Im gonna use coco, perlite and biobizz all mix as a base soil.
Just thought i would ask if you guys think this rockdust would be a good addition to my base soil.

Sounds like good stuff... I'd throw some of that in my mix if I had it. I'd look to the directions on the bag to get an idea how much to throw in. :peace:

The volcanic basalt rock dust is an excellent choice for organic potting mixes.

If the instructions on the bag do not give you an amount to use then go with 2-3 cups per cubic foot of soil. That is a very conservative amount and truthfully I would use more, but I am not familiar with using coir. Sphagnum peat man here.

Hope this was helpful in some small way.

I've been reading a lot about organic mixes on other forums and a lot of the PHd stoners have been saying peat is superior to coir due to a few reasons. I guess when making an organic mix it needs to be tailored to either peat or coir, though to be fair I use both :D:

Still lots of reading to do, not sure on this.

This is the recipe i used for my Supersoil:

Base soil: I mixed 1 cubic foot of this,

Coco coir 12.5litre
John Innes potting compost 12,5litre this has peat and loam in it,and nutes to feed seedlings for 2 weeks.
Perlite/vermiculite 5litre

My ammendments to this were:

Fish,blood & bonemeal 200g
Alfalfa meal 100g
Kelp meal 200g
EWC 3kg
Bat guano(1-10-1) 200g
Dolomite of lime 150g
Volcanic rockdust 800g
Powdered eggshell 1 tbsp
Epsom salts 1 tbsp Ive seen this added to other recipes that work for other ppl,but it is a salt and will dehydrate and kill beneficials
microbes, bacteria etc. But not all i hope. Its like a jungle in there, and some beneficials are bound to be eaten by
others, which creates more food available to plants in exudes from the eaters.
Dried banana skin 1 ban. I didnt want to overdo K content.

Think thats the lot.
I am feeding once a week with molasses @1 tbsp per litre of water,2litres at a time.I aerated just about every day in the first week of cooking,
and once a week now.Im in 2nd week of cooking, with about 5 weeks to go until i will need to use it.I was thinking of cutting my SS 50/50 with base soil
in case it is too strong for autos.I can always top dress with SS if i notice any defs.
If anybody has any advice or criticism it will be respected,as this is my first go with this tackle.
Thank you for reading.
I also have Mycorrhizal fungi, which i will add to the planting hole on transplant,as it doesnt grow if no roots to attach itself to.So ive been told/read.

Thanx for your reply kilgore,it says on the bag to apply @ rate of 2kg/sq metre of soil. Not wanting to overdo it,i added 800g,but i wont be using
SS for another 5 weeks or so,so i have plenty of time to add more if you think i should.

I need to shovel a few buckets of volcanic basalt sand/dust into buckets the next time I visit the toodle river in washington. When Mount St. Helens blew it coated the entire region in ash, but the river banks coming down from the mountain have pure ash lining them still. It's amazing standing on the edge of that crater and looking down in, knowing that at any moment that active volcano could take my life on a whim. It's not often an Atheist faces that kind of awe inspiring power or feels that powerless :D:
