Those are good things to consider and I didn’t think of either till now.

I only had to use a very small amount of vinegar and the cans were new and in pretty good shape, though I didn’t pay much attention to the insides.

Thanks and will keep a look out for those
I have 50+ years experience farming, fruit, vegetables and cut flowers sometimes to actually make a living. I have made or observed many many mistakes in that time. I am sure I will make more mistakes in the future. Farming is humbling. The new farmer can avoid a lot of pain from the lessons of those that came before them. We are all here to help.

I’m just stuck on getting my soil to ideal pH, for a while now, never had to play with it before and hard to find good info on mixing a soil, ideal and what to use in what ratios etc. then what pH I want to make it. I think I just about got it and how to fine tune throughout the grow. Actually pretty simple and just using what is around the house already, for me anyways.

That is because you are focusing on the wrong thing. PH balance is achieved with the elements you mix in your soil not by changing it chemically.

First you just need to choose a growing style. True Living Soil done organic, Fake Living soil usually peat based with pseudo organic, Fake living soil with salt fertilizers, Coco Coir, rock wool, other inert media with salts and pure Hydroponics in DWC or TFT. You do not need to reinvent the wheel. Then that balance is maintained by watering or fertigating at the proper PH for inputs for that soil type.
TLS = 6.5
Peat based = 6.3
Coco Coir, rock wool, DWC or TFT = 5.8. Hydroponics is more flexible and can really range from 5.6 to 6.2 because the nutrients can be fresh and change PH easily.

Never change the PH on a growing plant by more than 0.2 PH at any single time. It will cause the roots to have too much osmotic pressure and they will shut down causing stunting.

How do you want to grow?

Not sure, just growing with what I have, ~organic soil and coco. not really adding anything new but changing the percentages so that it will end on 6.0 pH once stabilized. Just about there, made mistake a couple times of not letting the soil ‘cook’ long enough and settle on a pH before deeming it ready to use. Once it settled, it was not good.

Need to let soil settle on pH after mixing/altering pH, got it. But making this mistake has lead me to some new things to test that I think will be pretty great for keeping pH in check throughout a grow and I know more about what I am doing.

And currently I’ve only used the coco in testing stuff so far and that’s probably all I will use it for.

No chemicals, except the coco salt grows

Super cool experiments. A+ on the inventiveness. If you want to grow more plants then your have autopots for, you can put the valves in tubs and put as many plants as you want in the tubs and it'll bottom feed them all...

good idea and thanks. I have though of similar to your suggestion but with a wick feeding twist And a few other ideas as well. I really like the way I have it set up now, everything works well and easy to get plants in and out. Very low humidity too with little air circulation.

I think it will be really good once I finally get some healthy plants hooked up to it.

This is such a wild setup! I hope it works out well for you. Really inventive. Would the "bpa free" cans work better? I think they have some sort of new liner material to prevent the chemical leaching MOG warned about. Occasionally when we cracked a can of beans there would be a visible blue tinted plastic liner. Might be worth eating a lot of canned stuff from the organic and "expensive" section to find bpa free lined cans. Just a thought.

Yeah, no blue liners, I do remember them though lol I cant recall if mine are bpa free or not but I think so

And thanks, I hope it goes well too.

1 table baking soda 1.0+ pH rise in soil, only did 1 test and immediately after mixing together.
