New Grower New grower

Ok got my set up ready and have decided to go with roots instead of fox farm. I have also received my autocob to go along with the cfl until I can afford another cob. Getting ready to try and pop some strawberry nuggets and sour crack. Wish me some luck [emoji3577]

[emoji1787] I got some chemdogging too but I figured with the small space I'd try to keep things minimal especially since it's too cold to stick anything outside here. I'm sitting here now figuring out how I want to germ.

Hey SlimJim! Awesome choice on the Roots Organics! Has done me well, only advice on it is make sure you use some veg grow fert with Nitrogen in it at the recommended time mine ran out but I never added any.

Uh oh the light side got another one with the AutoCobs, I am still over here in the shadows like vader with my stone age cfls lol!

@Slimjim Welcome to AFN. To get someone’s attention put the at-mark @ in front of their AFN name like I did for you. Just caught up on your thread. Good decision on soil, seed, nutrients and lights.

I know that a lot of growers swear by it and their proof is the fact that many plants survive the technique but unless seeds are old or have been stored poorly soaking seeds is not needed and can drown them. Then because they need the instant gratification of seeing the tap root they germinate them in paper towels. If you look at a tap root under 200x magnification you will see the “root hairs” that grow laterally out from the tap root. These become the plant’s uptake roots. They will grow into the fibers of the paper towels and are ripped off every time the seedling is moved or the towel is opened – ouch. Then when transplanting it is very easy to bump the tap root tip and damage it or kill the seedling – Why? Get some Rapid Rooters (or similar) plant the seeds 3/8 - 1/2 inch deep keep them moist (not wet) and warm 78°F and they will germinate if they are viable. I do this with the Rapid Rooter right in the pot they will grow in - no transplanting.

A trick when you start in a big pot is to water just around the edge of where you think the roots are. In 9 days roots will fill a 6" cube and the tap root may be much deeper. Water shallow at first and then just increase the diameter and deeper as the plant grows. Do not let any part of the pot actually dry out as the soil may become hygrophobic. By the end of 14 to 20 days you should be watering the whole pot to about 10% runoff. do not allow the runoff to sit under the pot drain it off.

Any questions just tag me @Mañ'O'Green

I planted directly into soil in 2.7 gal pot with no problem. You don't want to pour water over your seed if you do it this way, the water can wash the seed down deep.

I just put the seed in wet soil 1/4" deep, put a humidity dome over it and waited. If it gets a little dry, mist with water in a sprayer or lightly dribble water.
