Just a vpn won’t do much because the apps and whatnot running on the machine create a fingerprint. That is how we are tracked by Google. Seeing traffic come from a new address with the same fingerprint just causes them to look for traffic from additional addresses.
The safest way I’ve come up with is spin up a clean virtual machine with the network bridged to a vpn. It’s critical that you make sure there is no cross contamination of the network traffic between your local machine and the vpn.
I came up with this as an experiment in seeing what the web looks like as an anonymous surfer. It was like going to the mall in another country where I did’t know what I’m looking at.
In a pinch, you can spin up just a teeny cloud instance and use ssh tunnels to forward traffic from just your browser. This has a similar effect but it’s a huge PITA.
