I bought my dad a custom deer rifle with a black walnut stock for Christmas! It cost me well over $600..... Not including the scope...... in '73. It was an extremely beautiful rifle! I knew he loved it ! It was the first time I ever saw him cry.
Never to be caught off guard, when I asked Pop why was he crying, " I was just thinking about how I could have used this rifle two weeks ago when I was hunting!"
That was my Pop! And he didn't hesitate a bit when he said it................ But he had that twinkle in his eye and that smirk on his face.
I shot it a few times while he was still alive at the range.
I dropped a massive elk in Colorado with it. The guide said it was well over 800 yards and that coincided with what the scope revealed.
Pop would have been extremely proud of that trophy buck! I never harvested any other animals with that gun. I thought that was a fitting end.
