I have not started nutrients yet, but when I do, I will water as usual. Any excess will go in to the red solo cup which they then can Wick from I have had no problems with the roots growing through the holes at the bottom of the clear cups that I make with a soldering iron. ( in case peeps want to know easy way to get holes…. And the same 2 cup system is how I do my solo cup grows.)….. see PIC where I used small plastic coffee containers for reservoirs, plus they make good little stands as you can put rocks in the bottom of them to help weigh them down so they don’t blow over…. having these for seedlings and for solo cup grow offs are perfect as you don’t have to water so often as they can just wick up the excess.
There will be more pictures to follow and you can see, and if any roots do grow through those holes I am not worried about it. No probs in the past as when I transplant the roots come clean out..

Day25 New
The sisters got haircuts!!! They were both fed 1/2gal. last night with 50% Fox Farm soil trio wk3(its what i like for veg), with 25% dose of BloomCity silica boost, and a heaping teaspoon of blackstrap molasses per gallon. Pretty heavy defol but they need it and it will help when i flip to 12/12. Heres a before and after.

How do the plants wick from the reservoir? Do you use a wick with this system? Im concused if the roots dont go thru the clear cup, how is water wicked up? Thank you again, and please agin pardon my ignorance, but your plants look great, so im even more curious lol

Wick/bottom feed from water that is left available in red solo… if I water the plant, it will drain into the red cup via holes in bottom of clear….. The plant will use all that up before I feed again…..
in this process of the grow, they are a little too small to where I do a full watering and I let them bottom feed…moisture from the bottom feeding goes up the side of the clear cup, and keeps moisture along the lining so those lateral roots can shoot off of the taproot that is growing down to the bottom

Now that i see it it all makes sense! I was imagining the clear cup to be much shorter than the red cup. Thank you for taking the time to explain that, gonna have to try that when i do my first solo cup grow! Very cool thank you🙏

Sometimes the cups are shorter… depends on what brand you get and try to match up…. If that’s the case, I just water a little bit more……. This pairing of cups that I did the two different styles almost fit perfect but usually there’s an 1/4 o 3/8 8of an inch gap in between the red solo cup and the clear cups I usually get.
