Indoor GreenBean's Grows

Hmm, gotta figure out why I keep getting them. It's been about 18 months now and my "back yard" is gravel, a few shrubs that total about 6' in length, and a large "pepper" tree.

Are you growing in a tent during bloom in your garage? I assumed that you were, but if not, and you are growing outside of tent, then that would make sense with the pests. At the old place, I would find pests in the garage, but the tent in there mitigated the issue. Pests have been a big issue in my veg and outdoor photo grows the last few years due to the weather staying pretty warm year round.

Great looking plants.

I've got two Chemdog photos at day 22, one will be leaving the tent soon, and I need to read up on how you trained these plants. My thinking about trying an auto grow is that I can influence plant height better than I could with autos and I'll snarf some ideas from your grow about keeping more manageable. My last grow, Strawberry Pie autos, needed three lights to light the grow. It was nuts.

Thanks. Plants are kinda plants. There's obviously wide variations between the auto strains, but you can get consistent results...I would say 9 times out of 10. Every now and then I get an outlier that will stunt of whatever. But once you learn the mechanics, I seem to be able to get a similar result across the board.

Key thing there, again, is just trying and seeing what works and what happens, or not. Seems like that's a little "taboo" of a view sometimes though. For whatever reason. At this point I'm doing it all for "science"! I sorta kid, but I do want to see if I can grow a 2 lb auto. So I am kind of messing with what I do lately = topping vs not, less defoliation vs more, etc.

As mentioned previously, I'm doing another auto run next, then I'm going to run a single photo. I haven't ran a photo totally indoors in a bit. But now I'm at a stage where I want to compare costs per grow in regards to electricity and such.

Gorilla Glue grow. Typical where one plant is much larger than the other (there's one plant on the left, about ¼ the size of the other) and huge amounts of inflorescence. I leave the tent open with autos and have had to have lighting outside the tent for my last two grows.

I was thinking about it today — I guess the safest approach is to assume that the thrips are there and take precautions. It's a bit of a PITA but better to have to spray to stop them before they hit.

BTW, when I saw the colas in your last grow, I knew what your harvest would be like — "significant".

I've switched seed vendors in hopes of getting things more stable but I've got the processes pretty well ironed out. A big win for me was to get an AC Infinity controller to run my humidifier. I try to keep VPD on target and, for four grows now, I've been using a Pulse sensor and then manually tweaking an Inkbird controller. The Controller 69 + one of their adapters and the controller has kept VPD on track for three weeks. That adapter was the best $20 I ever spent!

Yeh, I see that - you're definitely getting into the "serious hobbyist" mode. A 2 pounder in a 2' x 4'? That will take quite a bit to get there, starting with CO2. And I'd love to see you tackle the defoliation issue. I've only seen one paper on it so it would be interesting if you could do something "with rigor". Lotsa work!

With your skills a 2 pound auto shouldn’t be a problem bro. I came really close in a 27x27x63” tent.

Jesus. Was that ONE plant that yielded that large? My biggest single auto was 22 oz. Likely a few oz more, but I was in a rush to trim (had to move at the drop of the hat) so I ended up composting a lot of larf in the end.

I've got work to do! A lot of it is picking the right candidate. I've been running through so many strains the past year or so waiting for "the one". Couple candidates so far.

You just need a bigger tent man. What is that a 4x2? 3x3 or 4x4 would do the trick if you can fit one. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with the pests. I guess you can spray. I hate spraying because it seems like it doesn't work much.

My biggest yielding auto to date was the 22oz Orange sherbet. That grow was in a 4x4 with 2 other plants (strawberry nuggets and a Sage Scout) and I believe the total yield on those 3 was... 45 oz. SO approaching 3 lbs from 3 plants. As mentioned in my post above, I have been searching for the right auto candidate for the 2 pounder. I may have found it in Mango Smile. I have one more strain to test to see if it is more worthy than Mango though. I think I can pull it off with a 7 gallon pot and just one plant in the tent.

I've run the gamut from heavy defoliation, to none, and back. I've never schwazzed.

My thinking is that a plant will likely produce as much as it can, or how hard you can push it to produce what it can. And usually, you can either concentrate that production in a smaller area - with wise defoliation. Or you can spread it out across the plant with less defoliation.

For "my style" of growing, or just how I do things. Semi lollipopping and canvas spreading yields the same with less hassle.

I do not notice much yield difference in topping vs not. Not topping and just bending = sorta the same end results. The difference that I notice with topping, in my scenario is that topping during the warm/hot months, seems to result in a more stunted plant.

YMMV.

Yes… one plant. She started out small and behind the others but really took off around day 30 and eventually surpassed the other two in a big way. Pulling everything down with the 3” net definitely helped with yield but a little tough to manage the canopy with the plant basically being locked in place. Obviously much easier to prune or leaf strip with the plants out of the tent.

Genetics is definitely important when you’re on a monster hunt. I have a handful of other cultivars that I’m thinking of growing soon that are known to grow big. Did really well with Autoseeds.com’s Acapulco Gold (499 grams) and the other 2 Bananalopes weighed in at 487 grams and 362 grams. Solid candidates… however the last time I looked on Beavers website I couldn’t find any of the Bananalope seeds to purchase. I do have a Fastbuds Cherry Cola going at the moment and If she ends up turning out large I’ll give you a heads up as I know you have some of those beans as well.

Check out mangos and chem from night owl. Definitely has monster potential in there and it's a 100+ day plant. And it's delicious
Oh yeah, that is another one I have been wanting to try. I'm just on a seed buying hiatus for a bit. I have so many seeds that I haven't run. Case in point is the Double Grape. I've had it FOREVER, my first Meph seeds. But I just kept buying seeds and naturally wanted to grow the new arrivals. I do have the NO Cosmic Apprentice which is supposed to be a big plant too.

1.92 lbs as in like 30 oz? Or 1lb 9.2oz? Regardless impressive either way. I always used to love pushing the autos to be more like photos. These days anything under a lb is a disappointment to me. I can consistently get 12-13 oz per plant regardless of strain at this stage of my journey in the hobby. For the most part.

I am always on a monster hunt. But sometimes, it is fun to get a Monster in unexpected places. Like that 13oz Strawberry Nuggets was a blast to grow.

Have you reached a stage yet where you are starting to think that you have taken an Auto as far as you can? And wondered if it is worth it over Photos at a certain point?

Reason I ask is because I started growing autos to yield more like a Photo. People always saying that you can't get more than a couple oz from and auto, and it would be shit anyway. So I made it a mission. We obviously know that that isn't true. But the more consistently that I get larger auto yields, I start to wonder if I am just wasting resources = electricity, when I could get save a considerable amount of cost on electricity with a photo.

Dunno if that makes sense? I feel like the first few autos I grew...they had a lot more "auto" in them. They were a big challenge to grow to yield larger. Now, whether it is the "style" I have developed, or the newer genetics, seems like the challenge isn't the same? I do still have some older lowryder strains that I could grow again to see.

Update on the Mean Well driver for my 320W setup = Atreum has been trying to source a new one from their supplier. At this point, they are resorting to sourcing it from another distributor.

Luckily I had my 480W to fall back on. Took longer than I wanted, but at least they are taking care of it.
