I’ve lived all over the world too. Actually born in England, lived in Japan, 28 years in Texas. Been out here for 16. Same kind of story. Met my wife here and here I am.
AIr Force brat? I was a NASA brat for want of a better descriptor and was born…"halfway to England", so to speak. Only driving I did was on the left until I moved to the US and my first day on the road was in the Philadelphia. Trial by fire!
I did a couple of years in River Place in Austin, up near Lake Travis. That was wonderful. Should never have left.
28 years in TX. So you're a dual citizen! ;-)
I’ve learned one thing about life = doesn’t matter where you live. They will find a way to fuck you somehow. Usually financially. One place may have oppressive taxes. Another place has oppressive laws that nickel and dime you to death. It’s all the same. There’s no way to escape it.
That's a little strong for my thinking but I understand where you're coming from. I run a "one man shop" so I have very little interaction with the CA government. If you're dealing with any kind of chemicals, you must bump heads with them from time to time. That sucks.
A lot of it is just the nature of the beast - government is, at its core, not capable of meeting the need of the populace thus the need for small government for a society to function successfully over the long term. CA is an in depth lesson in how not to do it. I knew this place was screwed when the Choo Choo train passed.
We are likely here until my wife decides that she is ready to leave her career. I can do mine anywhere.
Due to climate here, I’ve found that aiming for 80F/60RH is most attainable.
Life changed for me around 2005 when high speed internet was available to the masses. After that, I haven't had to move for work (as a consultant).
SoCal climate is quite something but, from time to time, I do miss snow. But that feeling passes quickly.
I don’t do anything special to keep the pests outside. Aside from never bringing anything like my homemade compost in, keeping my fabric pots washed and stored in a bin in my shop. Likewise with my coco.
Hmm, gotta figure out why I keep getting them. It's been about 18 months now and my "back yard" is gravel, a few shrubs that total about 6' in length, and a large "pepper" tree.
