New Grower Gratefully green husband

The stem looks healthy, no hollowness. I'm thinking I didn't have a Ca/Mg deficiency but a P and K deficiency. @Dudeski:greenthumb: called it out on page 27. Plus, some of the things I've read and researched since then points in that direction. Could be wrong though.

Checking the root system. 1: The roots made it to the bottom of the bag (5 gallon) and it was stuck. Not so much with the sides. The coco was bone dry around the sides and not any root penetration. That explains why the water would run down the sides of the bag and come out the side rather than soak in to the coco. The middle was fine and moist all the way through, no over saturated areas. Note: This was my 1st mixture using coco coir and this plant should probably not have survived in this environment. Hardy genetics is what pulled it through to the end. The next mixture I used on the OGKs has a 20% mixture with perlite and nutrients that cooked longer before germination. It will make for a good comparison when I harvest in a week or so. Have to keep the sides from drying out and hardening next time because, I have more grow bags, nutes and coco coir, and I'm not spending anymore money to change my line up now. Although, I may add to my line up and improve what I'm currently doing.

They say when it comes to the root ball: The first 4 inches is everything! It looks good to me, but I really don't know what to look for. The Tap is about 9 inches long (plant height was 15 inches) and the roots reached the bottom and stuck to the bag. Don't really know what else to say about them. Questions anyone?

I was talking to the local shop owner about this same issue. He said basically it came down to underwatering or letting it get a lil too dry between the waterings. Best thing in that even is essentially soak with 1/2 volume of water and "reset" the medium. He was right in my case.

It is possible that you are watering too rapidly and the water has developed channels through the pot. In my GroDan precision drip watering system I water very slowly over 12 hours with 8 sessions so that the capillary action soaks the entire block to 20% runoff by the last watering.

I try to build the dirt up on the sides so the the water is channeled back towards the stem. As the plant grows the roots always bull up and lift the center up and sheds water to the edges. The edges are really good at conducting water away from your roots. Might also want put some cover gravel or pebbles on the surface to diffuse the water a little so it doesn't shed to the edges as bad. Edges are one of the side affects of trying to get nature indoors.

Nice healthy roots! Once it gets dry on the edges it's hard to get it hydrated again. Plant turned out well. Lots of roots in there, so I think you did well :d5:

Appreciate it @Hypathetical Gardener but I'm not quite sure what you mean about 1/2 volume and reset. Can you elaborate a little more about what your doing to keep things moist throughout the pot. I think I waited too long after germination to water the whole pot and by then it was to late and the sides had dried and hardened. The problem with that is the roots are not making it to the sides and then your not getting the oxygen benefits of using a grow bag or air pots. That's what they are designed for. So, if they aren't reaching the sides your plant will never grow to a fuller potential. :pass:

Would it be soak half the pot in water and let it absorb? I dont think coco will hold water quite like peat
