New Grower First Grow: Flash Purple Mazar & 1 Seedsmans Northern Lights Fem Auto

Hi Savoy, I have found that the sheets of activated carbon are not powerful enough to remove all of the odor. A purchased carbon scrubber is worth all the money in the world. Even if your fan is not strong enough to push the ordor out of the house, using a purchased carbon scrubber and perhaps a little bigger fan should keep things smelling fresh. Good luck with your grow my friend. I grow inside in a non med state, and i have tried a lot of different stuff to control ordor, and it all came down to spending some money. I run a 4 inch fan with a can 33 and have no odors. It's well worth the money.

Yep, there are no substitutes for a purpose-built carbon filter. I messed around with the DIY stuff and it's just not worth the hassle IMO. Filters are money well spent and once you have it in place, it's good for a year or more.

Good stuff guys thanks! I work on commission and currently we are slow! So no extra at the moment. I'll make the tweaks I can. Full update tomorrow-ish bud sites are bulking up.

Week 6 Day 36

What a week.

I'll start with good news, then get into all the disasters.

My male plant finally dropped some DNA! I got 1.5mg of pollen. I made a silica packet out of toilet paper and the
powdery silica you get for drying flowers, put it in a vial to go in the freezer.

RIP my friend, may your children be abundant.
I pulled out my PM with the most robust buds used a q-tip to tap on a little pollen on
a selected branch. She might be a little pregnant.

Proud mother.

Also I watered my troubled NL with some bloom nutes, and the run-off was a 6 ph.
Shes perked up quite a bit and shot up another inch since the flush.
She looks a little tired, but hanging in there.

And I'll have to see how I did with preforming surgery on the carbon scrubber. I cut it down to about 9" and triple layered the carbon sheets. It's being blown through and seems to be working. But I had crazy heat issues and open doors so the basement hit critical mass with smelly weed. Its got a lot of duct tape, it was an emergency, I'm a little embarrassed.

Well I guess that's the nutshell. I made a lot of first grow moves it seems. Next one will be smoother, I need to tweek the cab a bit .
Thanks for all the quick replies to crisis.

Quick update.

Well the NL has shot up like 2 inches, its run off was a 6.5 ph! The Mazars did the same thing just before they stopped to get fat. The soil in the other two are getting there, still no signs of lock out.

And the ugly carbon scrubber is getting the job done.

looking good for a first grow, a lot better than my first. haha. whats going on with the DIY scrubber, does it work?

aloha :peace:

Thanks man. It's because of all the helpful people here.

Its pretty sweet going to the basement to smoke weed, water the plants, and eat a sandwich. Plus I had a decent day at work.

Week 7, Day 44

Hello all

. Not much to report this week. All the run-off ph is 6.5 ish and holding. My carbon filter is cutting the smell but not eradicating it. I switched up the venting so the air is pulled through the filter and venting out my basement window. Not ideal because I live in a city. I can't smell it outside unless i put my face near the exhaust and my basement is back to smelling musty. My two purple Mazars, while not purple are fattening up nicely. The northern lights is still looking a little rough, but still shooting up and despite lst on the main cola and a a few side branches is maxing out the height of my cab. She's also finally starting to bud up. Hopefully the height spurt stops soon.

The plants are pretty demanding in the water dept these days. Especially the NL, it dries out in less than 2 days.
I'm already formulating a plan for a more streamlined cab with upgrades in the ventilation and a hps hood, I'm looking into LEDs as well. That probably won't happen till spring though.

Not a lot of noticeable changes in appearance, so pics next week.

Thanks for reading!

Week 8 : Day 49

All seems to be chugging along just fine. Odor is still a slight problem, so I broke down and
ordered a Can-Filter 2600, $56 seemed okay, and bought a digital Ph meter.
I've been researching tents, and ways to make your own soil mix. I'm thinking of trying a 3 plant staggered (constant?) grow next.

The buds on the mazars are really chunking up. The branch I pollenated looks like the pods are getting fat so I have seed production.
21-26 days left, so I hope they mature.
The Northern lights has healthy new leaf Growth and the Ph is holding 6.5. Its finally starting to bud up.
Soil is a touch hot in the Mazars again, I'll use some lime next watering

So here's the pics!

This is a PM and a bud shot:

So I found myself in a tight spot last night. I'd love to not have to buy weed until harvest/cure, but I don't think i can wait a month. I'm down to shake and what was left in the one hitter from a couple months ago. I cut that with a some of the vaped leftovers I've been storing for these occasions. All I can say is it was like sucking on a tail-pipe. I'm pretty spoiled, I can get high grade on the regular.

I plucked off a popcorn bud and fast dried in the microwave. While not the tastiest thing in the world (like actual grass, the kind in a yard) man did I get high! it only lasted an hour, but if that's a crappy preview of what's to come I AM EXCITED!

I'm going to hopefully buy my last 1/8 ever this weekend and try to make it last till then. Nov 1 should be my earliest possible chop date for the mazars, I think the NL has another month easy.

I felt like the saying "water water everywhere but not a drop to drink" I can't wait.

The Mazars are showing signs of what look like nitrogen deficiencies, in like 20% of the fan leaves. According to the breeders stats my earliest chop is about 16 days away. I'm torn about letting it go or trying to give it one more flush/feeding. They won't need water 'till I hit the 2 week mark. The trichs are clear right now, though I only have a 10x loup. Water uptake had slowed, and last watering the run off was on the acidic side. also I have a branch of seeds to consider. I'd post pics but it looks like a textbook n def for sure.

I'd love some opinions.
