New Grower First Grow: Flash Purple Mazar & 1 Seedsmans Northern Lights Fem Auto

I was either high or my reply dissappeared. Thanks a lot! I did kill 10 lowryder 2 seeds before this attempt. All the waiting and anticipation is the toughest part of it. I guess that comes with the territory if your hobby is literally watching the grass grow.

Good show mate you setup looks tight i cant think of anything negative to say about it

Week 4 Day 30

So thank you for all the encouragement. It really makes growing a lot more fun knowing that others are interested. This site is pretty awesome.

Its time for a big update. I've been getting a little lazy about documenting the details.

As it stands the 2 PMs are budding up nicely, there's a nice popsicle forming up on the main stems as well as 4 or 5 promising branches. No purple yet.
The NL is still a beast in the growth dept. but a little lazy about budding up. The pistols are creeping out of every node finally (a week after the others), and she got some LST.
Its funny that she was outpacing the PM's in height so I shortened her just in time for the PM's to shoot up a few inches.
The male PM looks like a clown and has yet to drop any pollen.

My soil is still on the acid side though slightly better (like a 5.5 rather than 5-4.5). I did another watering with 2 tsp of lime on the soil surface 2 watering ago without much improvement as of the last watering. I am going to mix 2 tsp per gallon into the water next time.

I switched out the cfls to all 27k at I think 220 watts. It seems like every other day I have to raise the lights.

They're all getting water every 2-3 days now, instead of 3-4 days. Feedings every other watering following the FF schedule with reduced amounts 50%, at the moment.

Smell is becoming an issue. The cab is pretty air tight and vents up the chimney with way more cfm than I need, and its only open briefly, unless I'm flushing to get the acid under control. I put a glade plug in inside the cab and one outside. It def smells a little weedy in my basement. My girlfriend has made some light comments. I don't see how it's possible for odor to escape. I did build a carbon scrubber, but opted to vent my hood for temp control. With summer waning temps are 75 ish rather than 81 so I may put it in. Still doesn't make sense.

Here's the pics!

All My Children

The Northern Lights is the golden child. I think it may have a magnesium deficiency due to the soil being acidic for well over a week now. There are rust colored spots here and there, as well as some tearing in the leaves. The leaves in the top left corner are lit weird, she's a pretty even nice green. Trying to work it out, any input on diagnosis or solutions are welcome. I'm doing the research now.

The next is a Purple Mazar, I thought I took a pic of each, but can't seem to find it, they are still about the same.

And for laughs here's the male stretching out his frustration in a window sill.

Thanks all!

Nice update. I had my pH drop below 5 on my first grow and I got lots of brown spots and lost quite a few fan leaves. I gave them CalMag and got the pH back into the 6s and they finished well. Yours look like they'll be fine once you get the lockout fixed.

And I'd get that carbon scrubber going ASAP. The smell will only get stronger & safety comes before everything else IMO. :peace:

Thanks again for that pic editor, it takes several steps out of the uploading process.

I got home from work today and there were more rust spots on the leaves. The pot was light and pretty dry, so I figured I'd just go ahead and flush it out. My previous flush's were on the cautious side, I guess its time to go for it. I put 2 tsp of the fast acting lime in the water and poured a gallon, about 1/3 poured through, and I don't have any more water that's ready, so that'll have to be enough. Also going to rig up the carbon scrubber.

I noticed the PM bud sites have all these fat tear drop growths at the base of the pistols, like an onion. Starting to trich up too. Pretty exciting stuff, I couldn't get a good pic, sorry.

I learned a lesson. My nl now has a lot of brown/red splotches dying fan leaves etc. I should have acted faster with the acidic soil.

From all the reading I've done I had the impression that when there's an issue to not overreact, and go easy on any additives. I was too slow and to light with putting lime in the soil. The numbers are coming up so I hope it's behind me.

Next grow I'm going to mix lime in with my soil from the start, and at the first sign of lock-out flush and dose the soil ASAP.

The pm are not showing any signs and I expect next watering I'll see 6-6.5 in the run off. They all got another flush and more lime today. I'm a little bummed because the nl looks like it'll yield more than the other 2 combined, but with all this I doubt it'll hit it's full potential.

Smell issues!

Smell is still problematic at the moment.

My cab is 18 cubic feet, I have an 80 cfm fan venting up the chimney with 6 1.5 inch passive intakes. I attached a homade carbon scrubber which consists of mesh rolled up around a 4 inch intake wrapped in a sheet of activated carbon.

Logically I can't understand why this is happening. With the exhaust detached from the chimney it does smell a little weedy but I feel like going up the chimney should negate that. It's like an ambient smell around the cab.

My cab is fairly air tight, I can see a couple tiny light leaks. I feel like I have enough negative pressure to make that a non issue. Should I block a couple intakes to make more pressure? Or is my oscillating fan potentially blowing out some odor through the leaks? When I smoke a cigarette near the leaks I can see the smoke enter the cab.

I am puzzled, my girlfriend is cool but she wont be at some point if I can't resolve this. I imagine it will get worse in the coming weeks. Please advise!!!

My guess would be your diy scrubber but let a more expirenced indoor grower chime in and be of better assitance.

Hi Savoy, I have found that the sheets of activated carbon are not powerful enough to remove all of the odor. A purchased carbon scrubber is worth all the money in the world. Even if your fan is not strong enough to push the ordor out of the house, using a purchased carbon scrubber and perhaps a little bigger fan should keep things smelling fresh. Good luck with your grow my friend. I grow inside in a non med state, and i have tried a lot of different stuff to control ordor, and it all came down to spending some money. I run a 4 inch fan with a can 33 and have no odors. It's well worth the money.
