Dutch Passion Dutch Passion Brooklyn Sunrise Organic SIP

I actually havent added more thru the growing! When I 1st started in these juniors I split a 1/2lb between them and then got a full lb when I started full size and added maybe 2/3 of it into the big one and rest went into a bin! Think they croaked in bin tho cuz didn’t keep it near as moist as I needed to but EB def showed me how moist it needs to be for them to thrive!

With the way "we" mix up our medium for an organic grow, "fertilizer" is throughout the media. We all know it takes time for the natural process of top dressing will take time to be available to the plant. Organic mindset is to feed the soil, and all the little critters that inhabit it, and not necessarily directly feeding the plant. Just the simple fact of piling up the "fertilizer" in one central location, tells me that EB's mindset is to directly feed the plant. Maybe it's a holdover train of thought from using chemicals, but it's not the way true organics work.

I know you and most others reading this thread know this, but maybe it's not being fully absorbed or realized. Maybe it's from lending too much faith to the manufacture in them knowing what's best for the utilization of their product.

As I've said a few times on this forum, I'm a very inquisitive person. I need to know how and why a specific process or product is utilized and the reasoning behind it for me to work it out in my head so I can accept it or either reject it in it being something I want to utilize. I've been that way ever since I asked my Dad "Why is the sky blue?" My Dad was a very intelligent man, especially considering he only had the opportunity to attend school through the 6th grade because of being a farmer's in the first part of the last century. He always encouraged and fed my inquiries for new knowledge. I've wondered what he could have done if he had the opportunities of higher education.

So if anyone tires of my "Why is the sky blue?" questions, they can just blame my Dad! LOL!

You are correct in always wondering and your results show it pays off ......

one thing to consider is the soil in the Earthbox tend have have a high amount of peat, thus dolomite helps with PH and calcium helps the fruit, I like you wonder so I only added about four tablespoons in the Junior and six in original so not too much and it was mixed well into soil .....

MOB, I never even heard of EarthBox until you came along, and now I love these things. So easy to use, and the results are awesome. As always, though, Ilike you said, it’s all about experimenting and seeinghow we can improve.

Glad you discovered .... growth truly is amazing and easier than cloth pots, much easier ....

Earthbox was introduced to AFN when I entered in the Mephisto Grow Battle, it was my first experience with an Earthbox but after looking over previous grow battles and seeing the hydro guys I figured I needed something better than cloth pots and good organic soil, those guys were already competing and did well but hydro kicked some serious butt .....

So before the battle started I get this SIP Flyer advertising grow big tomatoes and I even posted pic of Flyer on AFN and joked about the method , little did I know I was about to try SIP gardening myself ......

on YouTube I found a video by guy called Pedro and he showed the Earthbox and results, which were impressive so I built a box for Sam and won that tournament as you know and here we are today, still trying to get same results I had with Sam and for the first time since Sam, I’m using an Original Earthbox.

Ok so I can def say TAKE THE TIME TO DUMP AND REFILL AFTER EACH RUN! My junior grape slurri is in has so much liquified worm castings down in the reservoir that the drain tube backs up when I fill water cuz the slits at bottom of tube are compacted with worm shit! Even the overflow hole for drainage blocks up now! Use a wire tie to plunge some out but makes a mess and stinks like a damn Louisiana swamp that caught a friggin nutria that then rotted and died! Man I need to figure out a damn method to fix this! Not sure if I should drag outside and cock at an angle and run garden hose thru it or what but I gotta figure something out! Don’t suppose u got any pointers Señor MoB??

Hey Mark, I think the answer may be to incorporate less worms. I don’t think having a handful of worms in there should result in the amount of castings to cause that type of Issue you are having. I think worms are great aid, but you can have too many in a limited container space.

Sorry I don’t have any tips for emptying, as I am still hoping not to have to do so in between grows.

Yeah MOB ....... Peat could add, but not fully account for their recommendations.

I think I have everything worked out in my head on These EBs. LOL!
I'm probably gonna get two Earthboxes. Two is about all that will fit in a 4X4 with larger autos.............at least with what I expect them to do.

A 1/2lb split into them literally was a tiny handful each but those worms been in there breeding and multiplying for like 10 mo straight so lots of them inside now! Also wouldn’t surprise me if part of the sludge isn’t the soil that makes up the wick washing out over time? It sure need to pay better attention when this 1 finishes and I dump it!

You are right. That isn’t a lot. Apparently the conditions are just too perfect for them to not multiply. I guess, I will revisit my plan after this run.

Consider the Original Box verses the Junior - you’ll love the results

I have noted the Juniors seem to more of an issue with soil in the tank than the original ..... Also discovered when I did a direct plant into the Junior I had roots down in the reservoir verses transplanting from a RootMaker - the RootMaker never have a tap root and direct planting a seed develops a tap root and that was an issue for me - so I’ve opted to go back to RootMaker for my starts .....

Guess the only way to clean out would be to dump it - which I have no issue doing, this is such a high value crop and since I don’t chase women and stopped my drinking ways, I’ve got the coin for new soil .....

EarthBox soil is just right moisture, worms thrive - Issue is getting castings out .... eventually you have to dump and reset.
