Dutch Passion Dutch Passion Brooklyn Sunrise Organic SIP

4+ weeks old .... damp rags on top help help humidity but more important it helps shower cap condense ..... still have about 40ish days to go - Junior will soon get moved to a basement corner to finish under a cob light

yea for sure, it’s even part of the earthbox instructions .....

So I have Dolomite in there in each layer ..... thinking soil is too rich in nitro - next batch I’ll mix in a little peat to help soften!

Why is dolomite required when growing canna in an Eartbox? Earthbox says it's for BER, blossom end rot. Canna doesn't get BER. Bud Rot is totally different than BER.
What does this growing method do to the calcium and magnesium in the media for Earthbox to say you need to add dolomite. Does this method promote acidification of the media?
I'm not one that blindly accepts info as the Gospel. I need to know the reasoning why certain methods are preferred or required.

Hey MOB what’s most plants u have run back to back without dumping soil out? This is my 3rd back to back and def need to dump after this and clean them cuz the boxes are so filled with worm castings they come out the drain hole with the water overflowage or I can pull chunks out Iike this!

Can tell diff between soil and castings cuz these are thicker almost gummy consistency and if it comes out drain with water unlike soil that would break down to liquid these will just stay same consistency even in water and not break apart!

Dolomite Lime provides calcium and magnesium which helps prevent blossom end rot and helps balance PH https://earthbox.com/media/wysiwyg/PDFs/OG_EBX_Instructions.pdf

Not sure if preferred or required but I trust Earthbox and their recommendations and decided to incorporate into this grow .... Sam I did not do btw and she turned out fantastic ..... However I did not add a pound per instructions, rather sprinkled into each layer as I filled the box and sprayed water to moisten soil .....

Gardening is one big experiment.

Mark I’ve only done a few grows and nothing back to back so my used dirt goes into the garden and I start the next grow with fresh dirt but what I’ve noticed is a lot of dirt goes down below the dirt screen and I don’t like having too much soil in the water tank so having more cash than brains I just get new soil and old soil goes into garden .... Last year I grew a couple monsters outside in that dirt, so it doesn’t go to waste.

Yeah, I know what dolomite is composed of and what it's used for in general gardening. I just don't get why Earthbox says it's needed in this fashion of growing.
Calcium gets locked up from too low Ph and it does also from overwatering. Could this be the reason they say to add dolomite?

I didn’t want my ph going too high so lately instead of using dolomite lime I’ve been using oyster shell flour when I topdress! Is like 96% calcium + other goodies and regulates ph rather than raising it! Probably just depends on person growing to be honest cuz used lime before without issue too!

Did you monitor your soil Ph?

Not regularly but I have slurry tested before during run when I had a def and ph was at 6.6 all by itself!

Earthbox grows do not exhibit overwatering symptoms - soil is always at 95-105 millibars, depending on where I test - so I’m not sure that is the reason .....Earthbox also advises add a pound per box ..... I only added about 2-3 ounces per .... I also sprinkled in some oyster shells as @TxRebel/Mark did and some crush cleaned egg shells, both which take time to break down .....

Both girls seems to be fine .... original box plant seems to have a little nitro burn on the leaf tips while the junior plant seems to be doing just fine but both I hope both yield well .... in about 6 weeks we will know .....

As for checking PH of water or soil, I don’t do that nor do I really care - I have tested my water and soil in the past and the tests always seem to be in the correct range, when growing with organics I am not even concerned - if we had any rain, I would use rain water but this grow is all tap water thus far it seems to be working just fine .....

I LOVE to grow anything - Watermelon or Hot Peppers anyone?
