I'm starting an auto grow after I was gifted some nice auto seeds here.

I've got a narrow closet area, and decided to try and maximize the space by putting in a tent sideways.

I found a good deal on a Lighthouse tent, and I'm really impressed with the strength of the canvas and support poles.
It's a 2x4 size, and it's also 7' tall whereas most other 2x4s are only 6'. So I have an effective area of 7'x2' with 4' of height.

I'll be using LEDs and training the plants w/ LST or scrog to maximize the coverage of the LEDs and manage the height.

I'm not sure how well this will work out as I'm starting w/ a couple super autos--Copacabana and Muay Thai, and they may take up too much space. I may end up finishing them outside if they overgrow the space.

I'd like to be able to smoke some of my own bud, and the grow is basically for fun/enjoyment. I'm not particularly concerned with how much the grow will yield as I'm not a heavy smoker anyway, but I just enjoy the process of growing and experimenting and I want to see what happens with these autos.

For starters, I have an old version Mars Hydro 300w panel.

I will be getting another panel in there sometime soon. I'm looking at those Blackstar v2.0 lights, they look like the best bang for the buck in terms of the actual high-red spectrum they say they produce.

I've got the first seeds started in 3 gal smart-type fabric pots with a mix of two different bag soils. I chose a Roots mix called B2 because it's less hot than their standard mix, but still has some goodies in it. I mixed that 50/50 with another mix from a local store that had plenty of perlite, rock dust, mycos and Alaskan forest compost, and should also be not too hot. I added another 10% of perlite.

I'll be using the Grow More nutes that seem to be getting good reviews on the site.

For germing, I simply planted the seeds about 1/2" or so deep and have been just watering into the middle of the pot with small amounts of ph water. The Copacabana, Muay Thai and Love Potion seeds all popped nicely within 48-72 hours. Another seed--Heavyweight Massive Midget--has not popped, and I'll replace it with something else if it doesn't show up soon.

The temps here are very hot so the tent is running in the low 90's with about 35% humidity. With a hot summer ahead, I'm setting my expectations low as far as what the plants will be able to do. I am hopeful that the sativas I was given will be a bit more adaptable to the heat and to any bending/scrogging I end up doing. I am thinking about using a silicate supplement to help tolerate the heat. I'll also be using some CalMag as I understand supplementation is especially needed when growing under the LEDs.

Hey BR549--Yeah, we're in the banana belt south of Eugene. I remember reading some years back that LED plants were performing better under higher temps. I don't know if there's any truth to that, but I am supplementing some CO2 with a little sugar and yeast until I get something more consistent going. I've read a post here at AFN about vapor pressure deficit, so I guess ideally the humidity should be higher to match the temps. Oh well. Not sure I want to add a humidifier.

I'm running 24/0, plan to do that all the way through. I generally shut things off once a day for about 30 minutes.

I dug around for that Massive Midget and I guess my eyes are bad, I couldn't find it. I'm sure it was there, though. I had two of those beans so I threw the other one in there today. As a medical card holder, I can have 6 flowering, so I'll be adding a couple more after I get another light in there. I've got a Dinafem Moby Dick XL, and considering either a Sour Diesel, Sour Bubbly (Mephisto), or a Devil Cream (Sweet Seeds) among the seeds I've got left. I was thinking about reversing one with some colloidal silver, but not sure I want to mess around with it because I'm pretty busy with everything else going on in life. I think I'd rather get some regular seeds in the future and look for a good breeder male.

Question: What are people using for mites these days?

(the million dollar question)

I've used neem oil in the past. Was thinking about Azamax this time around, but I've never used it...any input?

There's some borg outside infesting one of our garden plants, and being Oregon, I know it's just a matter of time before they start sneaking in. I read something about coca-cola recently. I might try that on the garden plant and see what it does.

The seedlings are like 4 days old now. I'm thinking I need to start a prevention program within the week. Any experience? Thx

Okay Medi,
It looks like you got a knack fer what you are doing. Pretty innovative to use your tent that way. So medically you get to have more plants, that's cool.

later:pass:

EDIT I use neem oil AND azamax alterately as a preventative with good results. It is also used systemically, but if I can just use it as a follier spray, I would rather not add it too the water/feed. I am not sure how that would affect the taste.

I` don`t know for sure mate, but that (Coke and many others) are like 1 point on the ph scale above battery acid...not sure it will help your girls much tbh...:pass:

I use neem (and did a drench a few days ago on my lil` window box,), I haven`t noticed any adverse effects on my seedlings (clocked a few fungus gnats, the odd thripp wandering around the surface of the medium and think the borg are active atm (due to a decent, sometimes toooo hot end of June/beginning July!). I`m giving the youngsters a spray each evening (just h2o with a drop of Dr bonners). If symptoms and detection continue, then I will foliar spray with neem solution.

Cool, I was thinking of using both. Thanks for the replies. I've also used neem as a drench in the past, but only in veg state. I'd have the same concerns about taste, but don't actually know if there's much effect.

I know the important thing is to get after the mites early rather than late. I hadn't thought of just spraying them with water/soap to knock em off. I'll keep a close eye out.

The coca-cola might be tried on the garden plant but I wasn't thinking of dosing the little girls with that. The best thing would probably be to just chuck that infested plant in the yard to a galaxy far, far away from here, but we do like the produce we're getting from it, and I know the mites are out there in the air anyway. Maybe they're so happy with that plant they'll be too lazy to venture indoors (wishful thinking). I don't even want to stand near it and chance they're gonna ride in on my shirt-tail.
