Bob's Journey into Hybridisation and Genetics - For Dummies

Day 75
  • I'm so lucky with my harvested ladies so far. Not one I didn't like 👌
Have been smoking the SFV OG from Dutch Passion the last couple of days and before I go to bed one half 'n half with some Mephisto's Wedding.
That's why I'm rooting for this girl, so that she can help in filling that Weddin'jar to the brim. :eyebrows:
    1689779276076 _small.jpg

    Some parts look almost ready...
    1689779276072 _small.jpg

...While others seem to be much further away
    1689779276067 _small.jpg

    Where's Waldo? :bighug:
    1689779276064 _small.jpg

So glad I used this girl for seeds. Won't be long before I sow them again. Have to keep that jar full you guys...
    1689779276060 _small.jpg

The Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter is showing beautiful colors all over.
    1689779276041 _small.jpg

As does the Mephisto's Wedding x Forum Stomper
    1689779276038 _small.jpg

Double Grape x Toof Decay is looking ridiculously frosty. You can see it even from this far!
    1689779276032 _small.jpg

All the above girls where pollinated with a real male which came from the cross between Mephisto's Wedding and Coal Miner's Daughter. So glad for being able to start my breeding project with a male. Thanks for releasing that to the public @FullDuplex :toke: And the same goes to the people from Mephisto. Your Mephisto's Wedding is an amazing cultivar and gives me a relaxed sleep, my backache is gone in the morning and I have a clear head when I wake up :woohoo1:
I've already tasted the resulting cross and it is equally potent, but with a more spicier flavor.
    1689786289541 _small.jpg

It doesn't give me the relaxed sleep and pain-free back in the morning like it's mother, but I hope by back crossing it to the Mephisto's Wedding I had growing, it could be found in it's resulting offspring? I'm sure as hell gonna try to find it in the coming months. If not, I'm positive I'll be able to order me some fresh Mephisto's Wedding seeds via my strawman or should I say my main man who lives in the UK and is able to order!! :d5:
    1689786289534 _small.jpg

    Look how beautiful. 👌 Oh-la-laaa
    1689786289526 _small.jpg

Oh and before I forget, my respect goes out to my friend who shared these regular seeds with me.
Thanks to your generosity I've got myself some amazing genetics to start my adventures with :toke:
    1689786289517 _small.jpg

Oh and guys, don't be worried, I have absolutely no interest in selling seeds! This is a learning project and what better way then to use these prime specimens to start with?

    Regards,

    Bob :toke:

    Seed harvest - Mephisto's Wedding x Sooty Bride (Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter)
  • Hey Wannabreeders :welcome:

When I went to check the seedmothers who were drying in the tent I noticed the buds from the Mephisto's Wedding where dry...Dry to a crisp as they say. To dry to smoke, but perfect for harvesting seeds...
I rubbed all the buds between my hands until they where dust. Then started to remove the seeds with a pair of tweezers...but that took too long!! :coffee2:
    1691187142173 _small.jpg

As you can see...the seeds are packed in the crumbly mess...
    1691187142169 _small.jpg

I then folded the paper to transfer it outside. There, with the help of the tweezers and a light puff of breath. I blew the lighter pulp away and what I was left with where these... A lot better, no?
    1691187142165 _small.jpg

After moving the seeds side to side, I was able to transfer them to another piece of printer paper. :lildab:
I wanted to count the seeds, but remembered the sorting issue above and went a bit high tech...
    1691187142161 _small.jpg

There's an app for Android, which can count things in a picture... What people come up with no?
So, I have...Almost 500 seeds from this Wedding Bx Sooty Bride (regular auto). Enough to play with in the coming weeks... :pop:
    1691187142151 _small.jpg

And play with them I will. Next run inside the tent will be another SOG grow...Sixteen 3.5L pots filled with BioTabs amended soil and one BioTab per pot.
Each pot will receive three seedlings. Which will give me a good chance to find a nice male and a couple of nice females. :woody::dancer::dancer:

Seed harvest - (Double Grape x Toof Decay) x Sooty Bride (Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter)
  • Hey guys!! :toke:

Harvested another seed mother today. This time the Double Grape x Toof Decay from Mephisto was grinded down to dust between my hands. :coffee:
The counting app said 217 seeds, but I saw it checked a shadow two times, so 215 seeds. Not bad...not bad at all!!! :hump:

    Seed harvest - Sooty Bride (Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter) x (Mephisto's Wedding x Forum Stomper)
  • Hey friends

Today it was time to shut down the tent. Everything was dry, so I went to work, just after I came home from work. :yay:
Not goin to bother you with the process of seperating the seeds from the pulp and just going to show the results.

This seed mother didn't make a lot of viable seeds. There were a lot of seeds, but most where not viable. --> I always do the finger press test on each seed that seems off. Most of the defected seeds have been removed because of the sepperation process. The white or small seeds are empty and defoid of water. So they are a fair bit lighter then the viable seeds. The rest will pass through my eye, with the help of a light enhanced loupe.
    Anyway, I digress...
    1691524769086 _small.jpg

The Count Things app did it again. 79 seeds. Not as good as the 500 from the Bx, but still better then my best from last season
Anyway, some cultivars don't like to produce seeds unlike others, so still 79, will give me a nice base to start with.
    1691524769077 _small.jpg

    Seed harvest - Sooty Bride F2 (Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter) x (Mephisto's Wedding x Coal Miner's Daughter )
  • Next up is my Sooty Bride F2. This cross was made in honor of @Newman’sOwn, who's the creator of the Sooty Bride, all be it accidental. I'm still in debt with you my friend. You don't know what you've given me with the regular seeds. Something we, thirty years ago, frowned upon. All we wanted where clones and have a nice crop after 5-6 weeks. And absolutely no banana's or it halved in price.:shrug:

I don't know if it's because it's F2 cross that there's so many seeds, but I'm very happy with the results. ♥♥♥
    1691524769071 _small.jpg

The app said there's 436 seeds to play with. So together with the other three crosses I made I'm going to put the parcels top of the tent so they can dry out for a couple of weeks. This will give me a couple of weeks off from growing and contemplate on which of the four crosses I'll be running in the next weeks...Food for thought.
    1691524769064 _small.jpg

    Anyway,

I whish all you breeders as much fun as I had this summer!!
I've got over a thousand seeds to play with and like someone here on AFN said, free the seeds, so I might be pursuaded to donate a couple of them to nature while onwalk with the dog in the spring time

    Regards,

And again guys, if you have questions, please don't hessitate to ask, myself or someone more informed (thinking out load @Sawney_bean) will surely answer your questions. Oh, and there are no stupid questions, ok? :thanks:

    Regards,

    Bob:toke:

    Day 1 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
  • Hey guys,

Sorry for my absence lately, but some sh!te has happened. Don't wanna talk about it so let's go on with the show :baby:
I'm calling this the end of Day one for my new Mephisto's Wedding Back crossed into regular form...
I named this cultivar 👉 Junk Dealer's Wedding.
    It's heritage is made up from 👉 ♀ Mephisto's Wedding x ♂ Sooty Bride (♀ Mephisto's Wedding x ♂ Coal Miner's Daughter)
After selection, sixteen candidates remained to be planted, each inside a 3.5L pot.

I only got the pictures from the time lapse camera. These start from when I translplanted the seedlings from the germination boxes into their final resting place :eyebrows: The speed = 30fps, duration = 23hours. I know, by the time I'm posting it on the forum, the 24 hours will have past, but hey...it takes time to process them timelapses... Oh, found this neat function on the camera that shows the time in the bottom right corner. I could also add the date, but I felt it was less important than showing the time...
    Enjoy :thanks:

Front left sorta... actually lower corner...

    Back left corner.

    Back right...yup, we're going around the clock...:woohoo1:

Last one for today, I promise 🤞

I hope we're off to a good start this time :goodluck:

    Regards,

    Bob :toke:

    Day 2 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
  • @DOA, thanks for the rep my friend

Day two today and even though it looks like the seedlings aren't doing much, the contrary is shown in the time lapses.
Let's start with the overview of the entire tent. Sorry for the crooked framing, but every time I close the tent the gorilla pod changes position slightly...

Anyway, duration = 24 hours, speed = 30 fps. Please enjoy :thanks:

    Regards,

    Bob :toke:

    Day 5 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
  • Thanks for the rep @JP1 & @Antonio_DutchPassion :toke:

We're a couple of days on and the seedlings sure have taken off. Glad to see everything working out the way it should.
All these sprouts were the fastest to come out and from those only the largest got selected. In the meantime all other seeds had emerged and got fed to my pet hamster 🐹 Actually set it asside as I didn't need the remaining seeds to emerge, but then this weekend I saw the germinationboxes on the potting table and lookie here...They all were looking for much needed light and stretching like hell.
    1695050670051 _small.jpg

Anyway, some close-up's for ya'll before I shower you with some time lapse goodies...
    1695050670056 _small.jpg

Just watered the soil as I had worked in some Mycotrex beforehand.
    1695050670061 _small.jpg

Next watering will probably not be for the next two days. I try to give as much water as the plant consumes in a 24 hour period, but giving slightly more and waiting 36-48 hours before watering again makes the roots go down in search of water...
    1695050670064 _small.jpg

...This also drives the roots into the higher nutrient rich soil and closer to the BioTab.
    1695050670070 _small.jpg

This is a fresh batch of soil, but I'm already satisfied by how it looks and responds to a water gift. The bennies inside are really starting to colonize the medium and that's why I added a new dose of Mycotrex before watering...now it's time for the myco to do it's thing and expand the rootsystem of the seedlings.
    1695050670073 _small.jpg

I'm also very satisfied with the addition of the code, which ables me to set a condition when to run the fan 1% higher. In the picture below, you'll see the situation just after the fan was turned down to 4%. It takes about an hour for the VPD to drop from 0.83kPa to 0.72kPa in which case the fan runs at 5% until the 0.82kPa is reached, then it overshoots by 0.03 or something and then slowly starts to drop again...
Next up the list to build is a humidifier which also runs on a D1 mini. :coffee:
    1695050670121 _small.jpg

Ok you guys, the time lapses...I can only recommend you install a camera yourself as you'll learn quite a lot from the behaviour of your plants, albeit after the facts, but in time you gain quite some knowledge into adjusting the speed of a fan or your lights, just because your plants start reacting different. What I'm looking for is the dancing behaviour in the seedlings, as then growth is the fastest.
    Have a look for yourselves...Duration = 68 hours, speed = 30fps. :thanks:

And a couple zoomed in to a cluster of seedlings...

    Regards,

    Bob :toke:

    Day 8 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
  • Hey friends

We're a week on and the seedlings are really enjoying their stay inside the tent, even though I am pushing them quite a bit, but more on that in a moment. It's almost time to give 'm a first kick in the bud with some Boom Boom Spray. This will be done at day ten, but I like to mention it now so I don't forget it in a day or two :haha: Until then it's dechlorinated water only. I might even delay watering until then, because I would also like to feed the bennies with some Orgatrex.

The parameters inside the tent are remarkable well if I may so myself...
    • We're almost @ 20 Mole with the DLI, it's only three percent to get there, but I saw some reaction on the rims of the leaves, so I toned it down...We'll get there in a couple of days :hump:
    • CO² is still at double the concentration compared to the outside and all thanks to this DIY yeast CO² generator I made last year. Anyway, it's free food for the plants so I'm happy to get it mixed inside the tent.
    • The temperature is on the high side, but keeping the humidity higher, the VPD (and what's more important then that you guys?) is just right.
    1695289552354 _small.jpg

Because of the software upgrade I'm now able to adjust the fan on a setpoint (VPD of course) basis, which in turn enable's me to...relax. I haven't visited the tent in two days. I do still keep an eye on the girls via the time lapse camera, but I only go to the tent when the girls need a drink...Thinking of that, I still have more then enough solenoids lying around to rig something up...But then again, I wouldn't go there at all...No, let's keep those solenoids for the greenhouse.
Anyway...as I told you, I was pushing the girls...Like any of us, I want to get the most and best out of this cultivar. It is a test...a creation of myself, standing on the shoulders of more knowledgeable people. And I would like to select the best genetic donor's I can for this next generation. In the meantime I would also like to get me some killer bud to keep my jars full, so these girls will be pushed to the very edge when it comes to VPD, light, nutrition and stimulators.
    1695289552360 _small.jpg

Since it's been three days ago I posted an update, you guys are in for an extra long time lapse. :woohoo1::woohoo::woohoo1:
Speed = 30 fps, duration = 64 hours. The second halve of the time lapse(s) you'll notice a jump in activity. This is when I decided to push the VPD from an average of 0.70kPa to a more dryer environment of 0.80kPa. This ensures the girls need to work harder to keep up with evaporation and in doing so take up loads of nutrients.

Hope you enjoyed Today's show :shooty:

    Regards,

    Bob:toke:

    Day 10 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
  • Hey guys :toke:

A fine weekend to you all and for those of you that are working, thank you for keeping the world running while the rest of us have a weekend
Anyway...update...I've given the ladies a guuud soaking with the Boom Boom Spray and then watered the soil with dechlorinated water with some Orgatrex and Bactrex (2gr. Bactrex and 15ml Orgatrex to 5L H²O) added to it. The Orgatrex was added to start feeding the bennies and myco inside the soil. The extra Bactrex...Well, I just like this product and add it every now and again, just to replenish the good bennies inside the soil...
    1695478023325 _small.jpg

Look at these fine colors you guys.
    1695478023318 _small.jpg

Even the runt of the litter is looking mighty fine. 👌
    1695478023311 _small.jpg

I really love this Boom Boom Spray you guys. It gives the girls such a boost. Normally one starts to use this around day 20, but I feel with Auto's this is to late and we could take advantage from a dosing at day 10. I'll try to start the next time lapse just after spraying and watering. Which in Today's time lapse is near the end of the clip...
    1695478023305 _small.jpg

The remainder of the Boom Boom Spray got tossed into my watering cannister. It's all organic ingredients and even if they don't work anymore by Tomorrow, it's still food for the plants and shouldn't go to waste 🫶
    1695478023296 _small.jpg

Still very happy with the amount of headroom I gained by emigrating the fan and filter to the lungroom 👍
    1695478023332 _small.jpg

From Today onwards I'll only be making the overview time lapse. It take's quite some time compiling each and besides the girls are getting large enough for you guys to enjoy them without zoom 🤌
Speed = 30 fps, duration = 53 hours. Hope you guys enjoy :thanks:

    Regards,

    Bob :toke:
