Bob's Journey into Hybridisation and Genetics - For Dummies

Hey friends,

Got some pictures from the males again. They are nearly there as the first flowers are starting to open...
Let's begin with an overview. As you can see each plant got a makeshift aluminum cup mounted below the flowers.

My thinking behind this was that if I shut down the monkeyfan and turn down the extraction fan to it's absolute minimum the pollen would drop into these cups...
1654838567043_small.jpg

Also turned the lights a bit lower to emulate "winter's coming"
1654838567038_small.jpg

Lower then this setting and I'm not sure anymore that the fan is turning. So I left it at this setting...

Ok, time for some male parts...:woody:

I like that wee purple one. Very cool.

I like that wee purple one. Very cool.
Yeah, that's a Purple Kush Auto from Linda's...Didn't expect her/him to express that much purple though...Last year I gave a friend a couple of the same seeds and he grew them outside in the garden. The color of the buds was amazing, not just purple like this one, but only at the tips of the buds a flamed purple, like someone just airbrushed the color on the buds...very neat indeed
The smoke wasn't that interesting, a typical Kush taste. But then he didn't cure, instead he dried it to a crisp :face: and then put it a plastic bag :redcard:
In any case...The color was what caught my interest and would be easy to spot on a next generation so that's why this cultivar came on my experimentation list... :coffee:

Hey breeders :toke:

A hot :welcome: inside the greenhouse. Today temperatures went above 40°C inside, but this didn't do diddlysquat to the ladies in waiting.

Some ladies even started their flowering cycle...

Hey Wannabreeders :toke:

Mhmmm...Below began as an attempt to update the ink on the cards as they were barely visible anymore. When I was finished I noticed I had a lot of plants from the two F1's I made and so I began setting plants aside and choosing the pertiest plants. Not alwayt the tallest, but I looked at all aspects of the plant...Vigor, color, node's and a whole lot more. I kept three females of each to grow furher out.
1655155434999_small.jpg

These are the plants that remained.
1655155434987_small.jpg

I fed the girls this morning a blend of 20ml Orgatrex and 10ml Bio PK 5-8 mixed into 5L of water...
1655155434982_small.jpg

...As you can see it got sucked up fairly fast by the pouches...
1655155434978_small.jpg

When I was done taking pictures I mixed up a batch of Boom Boom Spray (10ml/2L water) and added to that a heaped teaspoon of my last @Phyter's RotBlock. ;) ;)
I still have a little bit left and therefore am choosing my applications carefully. Now that the stretch in my Barneys Farm ladies has stopped and pistils are starting to form they can use a bit of defense... The remaining liquid didn't go to wast as all the other plants in the greenhouse got soaked in it. I still had some left and even that went outside on the fruittrees.

Those roots are really penetrating those tiny grow bags, do you plant the whole bag if you transplant or are you pushing these ladies through life entirely in that little pot?

Yup, they are only for seeds... I'm treating them in the worst possible manners. Keeping only the ones that flourish under those conditions
If I get a couple of hundred seeds I'll be a happy camper. Then I can start experimenting with colchicine and maybe win the Lottery :woohoo1: :haha::rofl:

Hey friends

Today was a good day. This morning I harvested the pollen from all but one male. The one I broke in half and put in a glass of water didn't produce pollen.
Now this whole procedure I needed to be careful and work in a clean environment. This meant shutting all windows, cleaning the worksurface with ISO after each and every plant I harvested pollen from. Also washing my hands so any pollen that stuck would be removed. But this also meant I didn't take any pics.

After several failed attempts to transfer the pollen from the aluminum foil to a glass vial I decided to harvest the pollen onto a A4 (Letter would do) folded in half, which I unfolded just before shaking the branch above it and tapping it with a pencil so the pollen would fall on it. Then carefully folding the paper into a pouch and taping it shut. I prefer this method as you keep all the pollen collected on the paper. Trying to get the pollen from one surface to another waists to much as it keeps sticking to stuff... So better to keep the paper so you can collect all the pollen while pollinating.

During the day it was to hot and all I could do was hang out in the swimming pool with the other animals, until the sun went under.

In the evening I went to the greenhouse and started pollinating the selected females in waiting, which where ready and willing, with a cue tip. Rubbing the cue tip not to fast as not to upwell the pollen to much. More like rolling the cue tip over the yellow parts of the paper and then carefully rubbing the cue tip in the same manner over the pistils.
Before pollinating I place the female in the large tray on the table which I filled with 3cm/1.25" of water. This water also acts as a barrier or trap in case pollen drops down. Rendering it harmless :coffee:

All in all I pollinated six plants today, making a note of it my diary. We'll know if it was successful or not in about six weeks. Wish me luck friends :goodluck:

Hello friends, growers and AFN fam ♥

As time progresses and you learn loads of neat stuff and there comes a time when one needs to step it up a notch. Well, I my case I got inspired by my mate Sawney who is growing his own genetics and I thought to myself..."If he can do it..."
No for realsies now, What he's doing is well above my knowledge level and I would like to evolve to where he is at now. So I got to reading and reading and after some time did some more reading. :wiz:
I ordered everything I needed to start with it. I went for the STS way, btw. And started with trying to create seeds with it. My first harvest of seeds, after a couple of failures where a mighty two seeds, but...but I had proven that with patience and practice I could make my own seeds. Which is actually harder then everyone makes it out to be :thanks:

But all of the above was done on a single branch of plants I was growing. This is quite unpractical as you have to be very careful you only spray that one branch. So I watched Sawneys thread and now that I have an indoor tent I am in the opportunity to grow (small) plants just for pollen. And that's what this thread is about, oh and the 'For Dummies' reference in the title is for me as while I start with this endeavor I'm quite the dummy at it :goodluck:

I started with the germination method I learned from Antonio. This removes the guesswork from seeding directly in soil.
View attachment 1448365

I knew I needed small pots and found these pouches online. Biodegradable and tough enough for one grow (that has to be seen of course). The contents is about 850ml which is 3.6 US cups for those imperialists among you . As a reference and to help me fill the pouches, an empty jar of my favorite coffee.
View attachment 1448364

So today several of those seeds had sprouted and the ones that had a tail of about 1cm / 0.39" or bigger went into the fabric pots...
But first I had to fill the pouches. This is easiest if you fill the jar first...
View attachment 1448376

... and, like a condom, put the pouch over the jar opening...
View attachment 1448377

...Turn it around and shake shake shake ♫ ♩ ♪ ♫♪ ♪ ♫
View attachment 1448378

This had to be done ten times...and after that I needed to lie down a bit as my back was killing me. Lying down or standing is ok, but sitting...Oh man!!! :cuss:
View attachment 1448380

Each sprout was placed inside a tiny hole only exposing the seedcap or in some cases the cotyledons and got a small humidity dome. The soil was prepared with the remaining Startrex, Bactrex, Mycotrex and Silicium Flash from the BioTabs starterpack. The BioTabs themselves have to be ordered still, but the soil is prepared as was the one inside the tent in my current grow. Oh and I watered the soil beforehand, another thing I picked up
View attachment 1448381

I've placed the trays inside the lung room and put my DIY cob light above the trays. Three cobs 50W (real draw) a 380-840nm, 6000-6500K & a 2900-3100K which should cover the young seedlings until they can go inside the tent.
With the small domes over them I sprayed the soil nice and wet with water and an added dose of @Phyters Rotblock. This is the final bottle I could make as the jar is empty now, but Phyter assured me his store would be open and active soon. So if you want a healthy plant go and get you some of that Rotblock as I'm for sure gonna order me a big tub as I need it in the greenhouse like a fish needs water

you transfer those outta the ‘bag-pots’ ? What size (for you ofc) why?
you cut them off if u do transfer ? Or just let the roodt do and they will fill that space and grow into any transport (planning on FF OF/HF mix) ?

thank ye kindly and ill have another set of ?s probably when u reply, lol…

EDIT..

I read through and have some answers.. i just remembered the bag-pot things and slapped on quote..lol.

carry on good sir. Nice grow btw. A definite help to my future plans For sure.
