Bob's Journey into Hybridisation and Genetics - For Dummies

Feck this Covid... one moment you feel as if you have been through the worst and get a breather. The next I'm gasping for air... Did manage to get to the greenhouse and water the plants, also made a visit to the tent to check the males, water them, apply STS and take some pictures :coffee:

This one is the one I broke and resides inside a glass of water so I'm not expecting to much from this 'male'

The Purlple Kush seems to have pushed some pollen already, guess I was to late for this first wave, but as you can see there are still pollen sacs which have to open. Now every male got an aluminum skirt which should trap the pollen from each plant. The monkey fan isn't running and the extraction fan is set to it's minimum. I've turned the lights down to 25% which is dim, but lowers the DLI and should give a signal to the plant that 'winter is coming'

So...All males are showing balls and this shows' you don't have to be a rocket scientist to create males with STS

Excellence mate . Perfect.

From what I've read, (LINK) it's the Tetraploids we're after. If you cross a tetraploid with a diploid (standard seed), you get a triploid. Now those can only be bred with other triploids. So we want to cross a tetraploid with a tetraploid to keep the extra chromosomes inside the plants. It's these chromosomes that can activate certain traits like vigor, size, amount of flowers, and so on. By adding two extra chromosomes you create 12 times more possibilities to activate a trait. ie, two x two (chromosomes) = 4 possible combinations, but four x four = 16 combinations...exponentially expanding possible traits and even new traits which express after a combination of two alleles from different chromosomes exist in the offspring's single chromosome creating a mutation... The fact is, without the necessary lab equipment you don't know if you're working with a tetra-, hexa- or other polyploid. But the fact you can create something new, a mutation that creates a new strain like the old-timers did in the 80-90's is so appealing.

so the question to you all... if you have such a girl, what would you do

- switch her to get the pollen - does that perhaps damage too much?

- try to pollinate her and get some seeds (well, I'll have to look out for some auto pollen then)
the question here would be one of experience: - what caracteristics usually dominate, male or female, or is ist really just a 50-50 shot to get the "right" genetics in ? For variety and opportunity I'd think if it's just a shot in the dark, I'd go for pollen, right?

- grow her out and see

get well soon! :bighug: It hurts seeing any of you guys suffer from that.

I'm planning on soaking several hundred seeds if I get to harvest that much seeds. The germination rate is very very low!
So if you get only one, rest assured I'll be harvesting pollen from her. Probably STS one single branch and use that pollen on any other Tetraploid female or worst case self the plant.

grow her out and see
And of course grow the plants out. See what you get and smoke some of the bud. All in the name of science

Read a blurb in a couple articles while looking up which is placed first on the name card ( ie is it the male or female....NL x BlBry, 3BOG x Samsquatch, etc) never did find an answer and can't remember that far back to school.
But, as I was reading they mentioned that most phenotypical expressions come from the female....how true it is  but it was in 2 different articles.
And If you got any insight on the naming thing, let me know....easy with Golden Ticket S1..GT x GT, but when crossed to the Big Bud?....GT x BB or BB x GT ?

And I would get some seeds from her first

Oeps, forgot to drop the pictures from the ladies in waiting... :toke:

HA..favourable...hope so, atm it looks odd yellow, but she recovers...time will tell if it's favorable..if I understood correctly this is one (whith three leaves).

but now I wonder if i should put her out of the grow and do try pollen with cs on her? Worth it? Or let grow out as a girl?
But i read some about it on the internet, and I understand, that breeders go for that. So now I wonder, is this just an accident or is it something going on @Antonio_DutchPassion in this direction? And whats the experts view on that?

Try to clone and to get some pollen indeed, but working these lines can be rather challenging. Its not written in stone yet :d5:

True, and knowing/measuring what you got is key. However, sometimes the best things came from unexpected corners and its always worth trying, you win some you loose some  and in the end its all about the experience right?

so it seems I just answered that question myself
it seems there's something going on already since 2019 in the labs.
So I guess, this wasn't just a naturally happening thing on this euphoria...hope to see more SOON from DP ;-)

Work in progress indeed

This is truly challenging and difficult to achieve, but I'm sure we will get there one day!:yay:

Later guys :baked:

Bob's Auto's
Those little bags seem to work quite well! If I get to build a growroom in my shop, I may get to play with them.
For the price they cost it's surely an easy way to do a SOG. You'll have to do something with a feeding schedule as the plants have used up all there is inside the soil. I'm going to crush me up a BioTab and dissolve it into a couple of liters water and feed the ladies in waiting. They are starting to show pistils and some are even in preflower so maybe I'll even start a brew from the Biotab water, Orgatrex and the PK Booster compost tea...What do you think?
