Lighting 400w HPS vs Citizen COB clu048

@Master_gRoshi - thanks, yeah, its been a while since I've been active here. I know wattage isnt everything, but I also know how sneaky some sellers can be.

Have my heart set on a couple of the new GN Thelos 10 Pro though
oh no doubt. especially the chinese leds on amazon etc.

Where’d you get it?
Guy on Ebay ended up talking directly to him. I suppose I could have sourced the material cheaper but by how much? Plus he assembled it for me at no charge. We talked for almost an hour on the phone and by the end he offered to assemble it for me. If I had some little bit of capital, and could navigate my way through sourcing, I would stock up and build and sell lights and grow dope. There is value in putting together the parts and providing a ready to assemble kit I think. Sounds like a good life.

Although my preference is REAL QB boards from HLG, COBs are still a viable light source, in fact, just about any modern quality LED can provide quality plant lighting. In COBs there are better choices than the Citi 1212, the Citi 1818 or the Luminous CM22 are good, with the nod going to the CM22 being the best bang for the buck.

The advantage of the QB is higher efficiency, better spread, much higher PPF, less heat, and doesn't need a tall, heavy heatsink.

My best harvest in a 32"x 32" tent was 228 grams, a half pound, from 185 watts of LED lighting. the potential for even more is well withing reason with the right genetics and plant training. I'm not big on plant training but 1.23 gpw is still slightly less than double what I ever got from HPS

It’s so hard to find comparison data, hoping someone with more experience can help. I have a 400w HPS in a 32”x32” tent. Issues with heat, not too bad but we are going into summer with this plant and I’m starting to wonder if I should build a light to replace my hps. Are the two comparable at all? Will my hps give me better performance as long as I can control the heat? Looking at the 4 x Citizen CLU048 3000k w/ meanwell driver build. Is this super outdated? It’s so hard to find good info. I appreciate the help! If you know an expert @420Forever mind pointing them this way?

A guy priced out the components for a build exactly to the HLG 550rspec specs for me and it came out to $700. Thst was with his markup. HLG $849-10% discount (smart shopper can always find a way to get a 10% discount) $764. Probably source the materials for $650 I'm thinking. I am no good at sourcing. I am too impatient to spend the time.

My 4 board QB 304 build cost me $540. I've built a 4 - qb288 for $490. That includes simple frames and wiring. For a 32x32 a pair of QB Rspec on a HLG240H-54 can be built for less than $300 and would STOMP an HPS.

Clarification please. Woumd that build be comparable to the 550?

I just pulled 300g out of my 32x32 under the 400w hps, my biggest limiter was space and heat. Hoping to cut down on the heat going led. Is there any real issue with mixing and matching? I’ve gotten a ton of awesome options from you guys and almost don’t know which basket to put my eggs in lol.

Not the expert here but by mix n match you mean UV, IR, far red... in the same light with the whites?
If so I think that is exactly what you want.

Is this actual power draw?? What did I miss here? Under 0.5c/w? Finda it a bit hard to believe :nono:
I know my qb off alibaba is advertised as 250w (cuz each board can handle max of 125w) but the actual draw is 236 from wall! Definitely worth the cost and I paid for mine last Thursday evening AND THE DAMN THING WAS IN TX FROM CHINA YESTERDAY! 8th day after paying it was already on my porch and didn’t go out til Friday or Saturday!

And are u referring to mix n match as in can get boards, drivers, heatsink from diff seller/manufacturer?? If so YES DEF! U do need to know how to wire in parallel and series and also HAVE TO KNOW WHICH U WILL RUN BEFORE BUYING DRIVER! If u run in series the voltage load is split between the boards/strips so if they run at 48v you’d need to take # of boards and multiply that voltage amount by # of boards and get a driver with constant voltage high enough to run em! In parallel tho whether u run 1 board or 5 that voltage load stays the same!
Gotta get inside tent but to photo the 1 but my current qb setup the boards have far red/deep red and UV so they are done in series so that a 2nd switch could be added onto board so I could flip the reds on just in flower! Current lights I ordered don’t have that on em so they are in parallel so also has 240w driver BUT NOT SAME AS 1st light!

To match that ( but use single heatsinks ) add about 75$ to the QB 288 build and use a 600H-54. With the A driver you can easily hit 600 watts.

As to wiring, the HLG website gives diagrams of wiring and also driver recommendations for various configuration
