New Grower First grow and new to the network...

I’m definitely all about tasting bud and not nutrients. I’m on the fence about the whole flushing argument though, both sides have compelling points with experienced growers. I am leaning toward the non flushing side, but I’ve been wrong about plenty of things so far. This next 45 days will be enlightening enough — I’m going to be a busy girl. 2 weeks after GG is harvested, NL1 will come down, and 2 weeks after that NL2 will probably be ready. So I have plenty of opportunity to get this flushing/harvesting/drying/curing routine down to a science and figure out what works for the ladies and my lungs.
Both sides do certainly have compelling arguments which is why I ran a side by side comparison and the difference was clear. Unflushed - harsh and black ash. Flushed - smooth and white ash. They were photos but I can't see that making any difference.

Just my two, but being able to improve my bud by doing less and spending less... no brainer!

Could there be a difference in what you use to smoke with? I didn't flush/cleanse my grow, I followed the advice of others here, especially that myth busting thread and used nutes until it was chopped. My grow hasn't cured properly yet but I couldn't resist trying some lol. Anyway I am using the Cloudious, Hydrology 9 portable vaporizer and my buds taste fantastic and they are nowhere near cured yet. Vaporizing doesn't create ash as such heating the herb enough to release the goodness without combustion. I don't taste any nutes just pure terpene flavors. Maybe it is different with combustion making it harsh and black ash as NiceOption says, but through a vaporizer this is not the case. I would imagine health wise vapor would be better on the lungs than smoke if that is a concern. The Hydrology 9 is also water filtered too, an awesome combination of vapor and water filtration. If anyone's interested, if your after huge clouds of vapor its not the device for you. Its purely for flavor if that's what your after. That's just my two cents ...

I have done all of it guys, and there is a difference in some cases and not in others. I think, and this is just my opinion from my own studies, is that is has something more about reducing Nitrogen in the final phase more than just flushing all nutes out. The more N in the final product, the harsher it smokes, but with vaping there isn't much of a difference.

I reduce N in last two weeks, and then use the flushing solution provided by Advanced Nutrients, which helps the plant along through the transition, doesn't just rob it completely or everything. This process has now been very successful for me for a very long time.

Awesome NiceOption! This is one of those topics that growers become passionate about, for or against. It’s kind of weird. We’re a pretty laidback folk for the most part. Paper towel method? LST? Smoke/vape? Whatever works. Flush? HELL NO/YES! As @Iriee Vibez can attest, I am a most stubborn noobie. I get an idea about something and I run with it, dissenting opinions be damned. I may just find myself on the dry end of some very harsh bud my first harvest.

That is one SEXY vape. The first time I saw it, I knew I had to have it. I also thought I saw some crazy 300-400 price tag but I must have been mistaken because it’s not what I’m seeing now. I bought a cheaper one, a flowermate, we’ll see how I muddle along with it. If things go the way they usually do, I’ll struggle with it, realize my mistake, and buy a better more expensive one. Thanks for putting this back on my radar.

I’ve heard such great things about AN flawless finish. It’s been in the Amazon cart for a while now, maybe I’ll just throw the GH florakleen away.

The “listening to the plant” concept is frustrating for new growers, lots of times they don’t speak. But I’ve started to develop an ear, or learned to listen or something, because GG is already telling me she needs less.

Haha! Oh, I wouldn't say that, DG! I think you read more posts, articles, and do more research than the average noob, so you know more. I think because you have done so much homework, you develop your own opinions, and preferences, like we all eventually do. You just got to the point quicker! I have also seen that, if presented with enough new information, you are not afraid to adjust plans. Those are all traits of a master grower in training! My money is that you will be the first AFN staff member from the class of 2018!

Ha! Thanks Iriee, that feels good! A little to the left ... :haha: You’ve got quite the thirst for knowledge yourself, watching your grows and your approach is inspiring.

I’m just happy I’ve found a place with so many knowledgeable people willing to help, and equally inexperienced growers willing to ask, to indulge this new hobby I’ve grown to love. I’ve got years of lurking and learning to do before I could be counted on to help in any real, reliable sense.

:worship:Speaking of AFN staff, a big thank you for sharing your knowledge and dedication to the community! You make this what it is. Somehow we’ll muddle through the AFN stand down, the blind leading the blind and all that. Here I am, lurching in fits and starts blindly in the direction of my first harvest, a wee babe in the woods, probably some messes for you all to fix when the break is over! Too many staff members have personally lent me their insight and advice to thank individually, I’m sure I’d leave someone out. But a big hug :bighug: and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

:xmas:

Damn, nice going! Merry Christmas CD!

Here I come with my 2 cents again. I don't smoke so you would think it would not make a difference but it does. I can taste the difference in my rosin chocolates. First off Nothing has beat the flavor profile of the organic live soil grows of my past. I did not flush them. When I started Hydro methods of growing I did side by side tests of the same plant by harvesting some colas and then doing a 3 day flush with AN Flawless Finish and harvesting the rest of the plant. The AN FF won the taste test hands down. Then I discovered by adding kelp to my hydro grows I got a much better flavor profile - closer to the soil grows. Not perfect but only super tasters can tell the difference. You have to be careful because kelp can gum up the pipes in hydro. So far I have had very good luck with the GreenLeaf Kelp Extract and my drip emitters not getting clogged.
You only need to do a 3 day flush in Hydro or a week to 10 days in soil. AN Flawless Finish is a standard in my grow process.
