Also is this a breeding standard?? So, I won't be a good breeder unless I smoke test my males??

Well I dunno if its the "standard"... but what i do know is the BEST breeders I know all say this is an excellent selection technique... these breeders include but are not limited to : Phreedom_man, Zygote, and Cres.... these guys are the cream of the crop breeders.... not just canna... they are so well studied how could you argue with them? lol

1) The female doesn't get potent until trichs are present and fill up with THC... Whether clear or not it's present. At what age or what point are the males potent? Can you see trichs if you scope them or do they get you high some other way...??

the best time is when the pollen sacks are just starting to open.... basically at peak maturity (like the female)

not sure if you can see them... I have a $2000 scope on my wish list.... lol
maybe those guys can say..

2) He says "pinch off the top off the male"... Again, at what point? Top of any cola? What if his sacks are open? Are you supposed to smoke pollen sacks? I just don't understand WHERE on the male plant would trichs be present... I can see on stems and fan leaves, hence making hash with males... But, I need more specific information before I just go pick off him and smoke him.

peak maturity, top enough of the cola to be a "smokeable bowl" when packed by your standards, (hopefully your bowl isnt the size of a cereal bowl... )
sacks open is fine... should try to catch them as they start to open... so you dont lose too much "essence" yup... the top of the male... the flowers (pollen sacks) of the male.
trich content is low on them and may also be a different type of trich... there are many types of trichs each with their own fucntion (some terpenes, some thc, some cbd etc etc)

Thanks JM and yes, I have summoned cres to come by when he can. I believe my MI5 males are there. Perhaps I'll be smoking a bowl here in a few days. I wouldn't think that little bit would take long to dry out.

i find the males dry pretty quick... a few days when its damp and like a day or 2 when its dry

EDIT: oh yeah... for pollen cllection i like to let it go till "crispy" leaves / stalks.... if the conditions dont allow, ill adjust to a place hwere they will (even 18 or 20 inches from a light bulb just to gently dry it out well) I usually collect in a small brown paper lunch bag.... works great because it allows drying well... and its easy to collect from... and its easy to poly a whole plant with... (turn upside down on plant and shake vigously!)

So when the male plant is mature and all grown up, you can chop and send them to Paper Bag/Container College for them to dry out and let all that pollen loose in the bag for collection? How long does that pollen stay viable in there? Thanks

Thanks JM for answering my questions. I pretty much understand everything you said. So I just find an area of pollen sacks, like a cluster? Then take them off and let them dry? I don't really like bowls even though I own a few. Is it best smoked in a bowl or can I roll a joint out of it? Have you done this before JM?

No worries Squid. It's something I want to know. I'm so new to breeding I'm still green... I don't mean to question anyone's experience and higher knowledge... I just want to know more. If I'm going to be a breeder... And a great one in the future (hopefully!) I need to learn from the best. Knowledge is best learned from the experienced. I lack that experience. At this point the way I'm picking my male is by what kind of dominance it has, (Indica or Sativa) smell, and structure of the plant. He has Indica Dominance, smells very skunky (like his father did), has great structure, (meaning the Indica/Kush I'm looking for and he has lots of branching from the bottom up), and his clusters are so tight and numerous if you look at him real quick you swear he's a female with buds everywhere.

I guess the last thing to do is smoke him! LOL

50% of the genetics come from the male.... potency can be identified in males, and breeding with a potent male is the standard for breeding. Yes you must clip off the top and dry it and smoke it. Your looking for a mild high, smoke first thing in the morning on a clear head.

Cool, thanks cres! I think JM cleared up when to smoke it though. At peak of maturity just like the females. So when they are good and grown up and full of pods, right? 4-6 weeks or less? Hopefully he comes back, haha.

And yes I take it you can roll a joint with it, Rebel, I don't see why not, as long as you inhale.

Gotcha Squid! It was late last night and I was trying to absorb all of it LOL thanks for bringing that to my attention! Oh and don't you worry my Man!! I INHALE!!! I'll see if I can find a spot on him that's smoke able. I Pollinated girl #3 earlier and he's just spewin' everywhere! LOL But the very very top of his main cola looks like fresh new sacks. That "cauliflower" look. Maybe I'll chop the top of it later and dry it out. Thanks very much for your help Squid. :thumbs: And thanks to JM and Cres for coming through and helpin' a Rebel!!! I am thrilled I could be of service in the breeding department or just in general. It is something I am really wanting to work towards in life, is becoming a well reputable and skilled breeder of Cannabis and veggies. cres is great!

Back to the updates...

It has been confirmed by my personal Bloodhound, Mrs. Rebel (her sense of smell is incredible due to her near blindness), that all 5 -- Count 'em! - 5 of the Buckeye Smash F1 Females have what I've hoped for and sought out... They have the same exact bud structure and smell of their Mother. They all have the same exact bud structure identical to their Mother. They smell just like she did and they are already getting sticky.

So doing as Captain has suggested, in what I'm trying to accomplish, capturing and stabilizing the Photo Dominance of the Mother... I'm hopeful the F2's after being interbred with the F1 male indica dom will be awesome!! If I can capture this taste, smell, and potency I'll die a happy Rebel!!! Things are starting to heat up big time. I'm gonna wait a while to post pics so you all will notice the difference the next time you see them!!
