Mephisto Genetics White Crack + Sour Livers SIP LOS Grow

24k is finished and I decided to tear down her Earthbox to see what is happening with her root system inside the Earthbox .....

I use a starter pot called the RootMaker - The Rootmaker creates a fibrous, non-circling root systems horizontally and vertically at all phases of production to equip plants for transplanting success .... See https://rootmaker.com/rootmaker-system ......

The Earthbox is a horizontal planter - a typical cloth pot is a vertical planter ..... Since the earthbox is horizontal planter a tap root, IMO, is not needed and the rootmaker accomplishes that goal as RM prunes the tap root as the pictures show ..... If you are interested in using an Earthbox you might want to invest in some Rootmaker starter pots - shown are pics of 24k and her root system.

First pic shows Earthbox dumped upside down - note the soil that fell thru the soil screen and into the reservoir - note no roots below soil tray

Soil screen removed

This pic shows soil filled in the wicking cup - no roots down in the cup, also note worm in wicking cup

This pic shows bottom of soil that was on tray - note nice Root mass on side - no roots circling the pot rather just nice pruned roots - also note no roots down in the soil wicking holding area - square shaped soil in top right of the pic View attachment 1160353

Pic taken near water inlet area, note roots nicely pounded around pipe - thousands of pruned roots in this box

Final pic shows the fibrous roots at bottom of the Earthbox

It will be intresting to see how the Rootmakers do vs cup transplant and Directly planted. I have had a layer of roots below the screen on my plants. Now I have 4 Rootmakers going to compare, but that will take some time to compare. I really dont want a large root system below the screen, as it could potentially confuse the plant on how to eat. Water roots could potentially create a deficiency, because they are soaking in Tap water and not being fed by soil. That is why I really dont support adding an airstone to the rez. I would do an Airdome inside the soil vs Airstone in rez. Peace, slow

RootMaker is one solution to roots in the reservoir but i wonder if a window screen placed on top of the dirt screen would deter both the tap and dirt from entering the reservoir??? Certainly there are thousands of flowers and vegetables growing in EB without the aid of a RootMaker .....

An Air Stone in 24k would of got buried in the dirt as the dirt slowly sifted thru the screen - I was surprised to see all that dirt below the screen ..... will take apart Nugs next as she is in the dark right now and in a few days I’ll have another look ..... All those fibrous roots makes a case for RootMaker verses direct plant.

In my 5 and 7 gal sips that I have used window screen as a barrier, the roots had no problem finding their way thru it to the lava rock res. It doesn't seem to cause any issues. At the same time, I have roots everywhere just below the surface. Pull back mulch and brush away 1/4" of soil and its lots of happy roots feeding in the mulch/topdress. I have often wondered if the ones that reach into the water, take up the plants water only, and the upper stuff take in nutrients.
cheers

I think a screen would help, because roots seek moisture and potentially can work their way down there, even with Rootmakers. The horizontal Root growth will help but, they still could go towards the rez. I am not sure if adding Orca is making me get roots in the rez more or not? Maybe a weed barrier could be used, Autopots use with Copper on 1 side, as roots prune when in contact with copper.
I have Airdomes, that get burried at the bottom. But I really dont think it helps that much and actually can be harmful if your medium dries out too much the roots dry up and can cause burn easily once it drys out

I suspect roots in the water or in the rock medium would take up whatever is in the water and this includes any nutrients that have leached from the soil down into the reservoir or rock medium, which is a concern and having that much soil shift thru the soil screen into the reservoir is also a concern but the results from the grows seems fine so perhaps nothing to worry about ..... but I still wanna better understand what’s happening - as I tear apart more completed grows I’ll learn more and will share!

Hey if somebody can look and answer is this stupid double grape doing that foxtail BS or is it just slow compared to pink panama? It ain’t looking normal to me for some reason! Day 60 today I think

In comparison this is pinky also day 60

Panama is supposed to be main cola dominant but double grape is just looking weird to me so if it’s a to g funky wanna know so I can stick it in mycloset with the autocob!:thanks:

Landscape Cloth sounds like a workable idea ..... sorry but I’m not familiar with Orca so not sure ..... but I do suspect the tap root ran thru the hole and bingo hits the water away she grows in the reservoir .... Interesting that you made no mention of soil and fact you could see roots clearly, so what’s up with that

With 24k no roots went below the soil screen or even into the soil wicking area or into the reservoir even though there was dirt in the reservoir ..... a close look at pics shows they even traveled across the air holes and stayed flat up against the screen.

I dont have much soil in the Rez at all. Maybe the layer of roots keeps the soil out? It is thick enough that it very well could have. Orca is liquid Mycos, helps with root development snd health. I can often see healthy white roots in the rez when I water. But not sure if the Orca is making the root system larger or not. I will know more once the Rootmakers plants finish if they still travel below. Once Inrun out of Orca I will.not use any for a run and compare as well.

Roots will find their way through anything, so I don't think you will stop them getting into the res. There's a couple of good threads on SIP in another forum that shows plenty of roots in the res and to no ill effect. @MrOldBoy let me know if its ok to post a link to those threads I think it will help out for the discussion too :)
