Mephisto Genetics White Crack and Kis Organics Soil

Great idea slow, go for it, I wanna see results in those 3x3 - one white crack will fill a 3x3 in a city slicker .....

On the covers perhaps think about cover strips - get some thinner 45 mil epdm roofing material - price is about 50 cents sq foot or free from roofing new job site trash - anyways cut the in strips and use a 8” by 8” cover or similar size around the plant itself - after you have plant and base all figured out then just lay appropriate sized strips on either sides - who says cover has to be one piece ..... and transplant would be easy - transplant first then strip in around plant - use duct tape to hold in place, wash talcum from epdm first for better stick, and then lay strips on either side - pieces could be wide enough to hang over edge - no tie off needed - if worried put Velcro on sides and epdm .... idea just tossing out - I have no desired to make a SIP but if I can improve i will - with sam I had epdm pieces over the original cover. - mulch heaped up necessitated the move.77
I want to make Top Dressing easier, but that sounds harder , maybe a good idea for someone else? My initial design is to use the LID from the TOTE, and nothing else, no h/ģ. We will see if that works at all?
idea - but top dressings would be limited to a flat lid.
That is the whole point MOB! Leaving the area to be Top Dressed intentionally lower when you initally fill the Tote in anitcipation for multiple top dressings in that section. Quite Frankly the Mulch cover is a pain in the ass at times and making the SIP from 12 Gal allows me room to have more Soil than a Junior has...even with the CAP the Junior only holds 5gal to the rim and 7 gal MAX with Mounded over top dressings. The 12 gal Tote will hold 9 or 10 gal of Soil to the rim.

That was my thought exactly. Larger capacity equals no reason to mound. I am sure it will work just fine.
I can't wait to see your new homemade sips in action.
cheers

a storage tote with the lid split in half width wise would be great..you could just duct tape the lid together or something, creating a hinge, then just lift either side for top dressing.. only issue i could foresee is the several inches of stem under the lid being susceptible to disease, but you could just mound soil around the stem up to lid level.. pics would be nice agree!

then again, this looks nice and has a mulch cover!
big enough for single plant?

Yep, I posted that and it is large enough for 1 plant. However the size is not perfext for anyone using a 2x4 or 4x4. 24.5 inches is not great for those sized tents. But diung a single City Picker in a 3x3 would work well if you only want to do 1 plant. And yes, I am going to use Blue Painters tape at the cut. It is cheap and easy to remove for top dressings. The lid will be easier to be removed for Top Dressing vs Hinged. And you simply make the section with the plant an few inches higher than the area to be top dressed. Sloping the soil down. The plant area will be filled to the Rim, and the larger section will be a few inches below. Think Sub-grade and concrete. You plan ahead for the anount of top dressing, leaving it lower and bringing it up to Grade by the end of the grow aka the rim. Peacex slow

Condensation is an important part of the puzzle ......

Will a hard plastic lid condensate like the ”shower cap”?
Not sure, and I really dont think Condensation is as important with a larger amount of Base Soil vs smalle amount. I can easily spray the soil with a Spray Bottle if I want more condensation. Realistically without warm enough conditions, you wont get condensation with a Shower cap either. Only 1 way to find out how well it works, and that is to try it out. Was too busy with Wrestling Regionals to make it to Menards yesterday like I wanted to. Dropping the kid off at bus stop and going tomorrow morning. Will add pics as I build it. Peacex slow

ive got 14-16 or so gallons of soil in a large tote and its dripping wet every time i open the lid it to check on it.. Its probably not a completely airtight seal, but close and nothing a little adhesive foam weatherstripping couldnt remedy?

the 24.5 x 20.5 would work well with larger strains in a 4 x 4 if they are big enough for xl strains and if you only ran 2.. you would just have to place them side by side with the longer sides parallel to each other like this:

You are correct, 2 would fit in a 4x4. But I can start up to 4 Juniors in a 2x4...where as you could only fit 1 City Pickers in a 2x4 to start plants. You could def do 2 larger strains in a 4x4 with 2 City Pickers, however I would prefer to do more thn 2 plants in a 4x4. I feel like there is wasted space when I do 2 plants in a 4x4. I have 2 Juniors in a 4x4 right now. They take up 80% of the tent. So about 20% wasted space. Kind of why I am getting a couple of 3x3 tents. I can do 2 small/medium strains in a 3x3 and fill.it out fully. Doing 3 or 4 plants in a 4 x4 can be hard, you have to have the right strains and not over train them. You can do 4 Sour Stompers in a 4x4, they grow tall and narrow. But most of my plants grow larger than advertised, so a medium sized strain becomes a larger plant than expected. The only true small strain that I have ever done was 24 Carat and I was not a huge fan of it. Even my Sour Cracks do rather well, I can do 4 of them in a 4x4. But not many other Auto strains are small enough for me to do more than 2 in a 4x4 to all the way to harvest. I can only do 4 to 6 plants in my 4x8 and there is a fine line on how many. I had 5 in Juniors, but 1 was smaller. Also, my home made SIPs will be 22x16 inches. So you can do up to 6 in a 4x4, but 4 would be my max. Peace, slow
