When can you call a strain yours, if ever?

@Darth Abraham Just going off the Name of the thread...:headbang:..my Breeding ettiquette says that you must hybrid something New out of a cross Before you call it your own.

My First Ever crosses were White..25% Auto..and around 30 inches..12-14 week germ to harvest.
By the time they were hybrid they we multi coloured..fully Auto..and 14 inch -9 weekers...:d5:..then they were Mine..

Around f6...by the time I Thought so.

But...when you Think about it..all Breeders are thieves...coz we didn't Invent canna...we just Try to Improve something that is already Made.

I consider myself Lucky to have got them when Autos weren't fully Auto...so I got to See the photo side too..it was a very enjoyable Journey...most people won't make now coz it tends to be fully auto to Auto cross...

In my day...if you wanted to Auto something...you had to Make it yourself....

You are a Rare one..:headbang:..it is the way I Work too...

Get to Know 1 cross really..really well....then add something you Think will Improve it.

If you don't fully Know your base Cross...how can you Improve it...or understand the dominance in any cross you make..?
It is like buying a car with 6 gears..only using 4..then saying I'm going to soup the engine up......

Very much agreed.

"But...when you Think about it..all Breeders are thieves...coz we didn't Invent canna...we just Try to Improve something that is already Made."

To be honest I respect a lot of your work, but might steal some of your genetics. Or I like to think of it as capturing genetics haha. The ALF and Dragon Lines are one of the few auto lines that I've been impressed by as a breeding line. I've been working on my own genetics, and recently picked up my dad's IBL to work with. I want to put them into auto forms, but I'm picky about males. I'd say male selection is my strong point in breeding, I'm not even a very good grower, but I can pick a male that will make a better daughter than the mom usually.

Unusually...I Positively Encourage people to make their own crosses from my girls...:headbang:...

Probably coz you caught on we both had the same Ethic...:d5:..I Like Pedigree lines.

I'm still Working on the same pack of seeds I originally bought 11 Years ago....:crying:...they might be in the high 20's generations..but still working the Line..:dragon2:

Full Duplex's AFL#5 will be going on Live Test from 1st Feb 2019...:headbang:..and I Think Stone still has Black Stone over at The Portal.

You understand the ALF line...? ALF is Afghan Little Fluck......the Number denotes how many Afghan dominants have been added to the Line.

ALF#4 is Black Dragon. FullDuplex took that and Added an extra Afghan cross..so he moved it to ALF#5

Stone did similar for the Black Stone....... ALF#4 to a further Afghan dominant..

I'd say male selection is my strong point in breeding, I'm not even a very good grower, but I can pick a male that will make a better daughter than the mom usually.

Good Breeding point....:headbang:..I always Think it is Easier to pick a Good Mother when they are waving a nice rack of buds in your face and wafting scent...good Male picking is harder...so you are ahead of the pack already.

Good Luck on your Journey..........:dragon4:

Same seed..same parents...same age and conditions....just a small genetic shift says 1 is Auto and the other is photo period.

Ahhh, capitalism at its finest, or should I say lowest..... Just because someone before you dumped some pollen on a plant mixing up the genetics a bit, doesn't mean they own anything, its a damned plant! You can copyright the name but you can't own the genetics, well unless you have an army to enforce it like Monsanto..... Now I've made some crosses that i call " mine " but what if someone else makes the same mix? Should I be outraged? File a lawsuit? Rant in the forums? But ohh, the years of work they put into it! Horseshit! The most time is spent in the initial selection of parents, after that its a waiting game. And I'm not talking about pollen chucking, i'm talking about thoughtful selection and breeding. You do know that the real purpose of feminized seed is to prevent you from breeding and to lock you into having to buy new seed on a regular basis. Convenience my ass! its all about the buck......... And NOT ONE in TEN ( and I'm being generous ) gives to shits about you, just your money. When breeders are reaching up to $20, and even over $30 per seed, tell me that isn't anything but thievery! I bought and paid dearly for my seed and I'll use them anyway I see fit. I give credit where credit is due, thats only fair to acknowledge the breeder who's seed you used, but lets not let our plants become like software with a EULA on every pack telling you what you can and can't do with them, and telling you you don't even own them.........

I've been reading some breeding threads, and found some where people who had just crossed a couple of different breeds, and were already calling the strain their own.

Personally I find this a bit much, and wouldn't consider calling that plant mine when all you've done is shove them together for a while.

It got me thinking though, under what conditions can you call a plant / strain yours?

How many F's would you go through, or is it just crossing & it's yours? What do people think?

I wouldn't mind having a plant to my name, but I was thinking undiscovered stuff. I have a Jamaican unknown that I intend to use for this, but only as there is no entitlement to the plant by anyone.

There's over millions of different strains. I doubt someone is going to make the same exact crosses cuts is you. If it takes 3 crosses to make your own strain. How's somebody else going to have the same 3 combination of crosses is you? With all the hybrids bred now days. You always get something different. But I agree with most of what your saying buddy

I've seen two people in an Oregon Grower's group on fb, argue over which one of them was the breeder of a cross; someone posted a pic of. I have kind of a darker sense of humor, so I found it funny. Even though I knew which one of them had made the cross. The confusion was they both had crossed the Black, one of them with Purple Kush. The other one with Purple OG Kush which was a Purple Urkel and OG cross.

It was funny to me because the guy that didn't breed the cross was like "yeah I know the breeder, great looking guy" or something to that effect, and the guy that did breed it was like thanks it was a fun project etc. Then it went back and forth. When the dude who had posted the pic got the seeds straight from the breeder, and just misunderstood the first dude's question about the cross.

I love coming across your posts and hearing your thoughts on things :bighug:

This site is warming me up to that idea. Seeing people respect the plant and it's heritage and preservation is nice. I'm from the old school Nor Cal grower mentality from my grandpa and dad, that I have the best shit and I want to keep the best shit.

Like I have an IBL from my dad, that only him and I have. That he kept the heritage of it like a secret to me, even after giving me seeds and telling me I better not give any clones out of it. He recently revealed the whole heritage to me, but it was slow coming and took like 6 months of occasionally asking questions he'd ignore haha.

I respect my dad's wishes, and although I can cross it as much as I want, and even make an auto version with his permission. I could never share the regular IBL seeds. Which I understand, my dad's had a rough outlaw life being a grower and has gone to prison for weed. There's 10+ years of work in those seeds, and that was after 20+ years of experience. If I sold the regs, and some millennial found that keeper male and crossed it to a cookie or glue clone, and made the next zkittlez or some shit and made a bunch of money off of it, while my dad gets no credit or anything that would piss me off.

Probably coz you caught on we both had the same Ethic...:d5:..I Like Pedigree lines.

I totally understand your dedication, pretty much everything I'm growing right now is a descendant of my first Iranian male x Cinex clone cross, or is my dad's strain. Yeah I've been following Fullduplex's threads on the ALF lines and their heritage. That's why I'm so interested in it, because I have access to a lot of landrace Indicas, and crosses of landrace indicas that are unique to our area. I think I'm going to hold out for that ALF [HASHTAG]#5[/HASHTAG], I want some fucking weed baseball bats in my grow room, I'm not even going to front haha.

Thank you I appreciate that. I developed the ability to pick good males, because I'm a cheap and lazy grower sometimes, and wasn't very good at cloning haha. I usually use my eyes for the structure, health etc. Then my nose for everything else. A lot of times he was my favorite plant the whole time haha. Because of that a lot of times I expect some of my best girls to be boys, and pick them as my male only to be mistaken haha.

Like when I took my Iranian Cinex to f2, I picked the girl to be my keeper male, and the male to be my keeper female. I'm learning to not assume a plant's gender haha.
