Well it was my understanding that for each point you top you gain 2 additional colas?

So was just interested why people leave them till further on?

when u top a plant u divert the "juices" to the lower shoots, so it's not just about making one top into two, it changes the overall growth of the plant..
topping at 4-5 node gives a nice balance of both ...

hope that makes some sense
