Fellow AFN Members,

As my plants continue to grow I have noticed some of the inital leaves are dying off. Should I cut the dying leaves or remove the stem which supports the leaves. I do not want to stress the ladies and have them spend energy thinking about repair instead of growth.

A lot of people clip them off, I wait til they start to die and then can tug gently until it breaks off.

Yup, what Afrikaaner said. When they start turning yellow, I pull 'em off. Or if a big fan leaf is blocking a bud site, I cut it off at the base next to the main stem. I've got some photoperiod plants that are crazy with the leaves so I do a lot of pruning with them to open up the body of the plant for air flow and light penetration. It won't stress 'em out that bad. Figure in nature they're gonna get hit with hail and rain and the likes and lose leaves that way.

Just so I understand. I should leave the stem with no leave or snip near stem?

When there about 50% or more dead, take em off stem and all. They will generally come off easy with a tug.

hmm, when i do prune, i usually leave a little stem sticking out, but i have no idea if this is good or bad. i only do it this way because i'm afraid to get too close to the main stem and damage it by accident. hence why i usually just wait and pull.
