New Grower SPZ's Mephisto Triple Automatic Redux

Day 37

I switched to the bloom nutes today. I'm feeding 2ml/L bloom a+b, 2.5 ml/L calmag, 2ml/L bug bud and 1ml/L b52. I don't have the fancy terpinator that Hans uses but I'll use what I have at 50% bottle strength.

Group shot, looking good!

A couple of the girls grew an inch or two in a day and around 19" from the lights they got burned a little at the tops!

The lights are back up to 24" but I'm running out of room up there! I got another 8-10" I can raise the lights, tops.

There may be three or four leaves that don't look 100%, I think I switched to the bloom nutes and higher concentrations about a week late, not too worried

A few leaves are clawing

A few speckles on lower leaf, maybe mag def

First off a report that res was at 6.3 so it climbed another 0.2 points. I've totally disabled the pump so this is pump free test. I've been doing some reading on the topic here, are some thoughts...

This was the best guide I could find for the acceptable pH range in hydro:
  • between 5.5 and 5.8 perfect
  • between 5.3 and 6.5 good
  • between 5.0 and 7.0 acceptable
  • below 4.5 and above 8.0 disrupted absorption of nutrients
  • below 3.5 and above 9.0 irreversible damage to the roots
Here is a chart of nutrient availability:

One thing I've read is that since different nutrients are most available at different pH levels it is actually a good thing for the pH to drift through a range so that different nutrients are absorbed. Like @Nosias said 5.8 is just a target, there's actually a whole range. Numerous sites advise against continually trying to adjust the pH by adding more ph down or whatever, as too much of that raises the EC of the solution and can also cause nutrient lockout.

Another thing I've been reading is that the AN nutrients (like most non-organic nutrient lines) are chelated so that the nutrients are available at a wider pH range.

There's some food for thought. I'll continue to monitor the res and read up on this. For now I will not adjust the pH but just record the measurements and watch the plants.

Looking good brother. I do something similar, instead of keeping my buckets at Target PH I lean towards the low side during bucket/nute change and as water decreases PH rises a bit to level off at optimal PH right around the time I top off my buckets.

I thought a 5 x 5 x 7 fit my space and gave me room. I am happy about the choice. Full Tent . That is not a concern it is something to brag about. Show pics to the family. Go to bars and drink until you are Full Tent. I understand it will be a long time to when you need to do trim. But it is a Full Tent

I was hoping to see mo' pics, @SPZ . I am not Rushing you, just want to see 'em

Day 44

Haven't had a lot of time for posting but lots has happened over the past week! My friend and local grow guru came over and set me straight that it was actually nutrient burn working its way down the plants. I kept diluting the bloom nutrients but the girls kept producing new leaves with burnt tips. I read a bit on the forums and found a really great thread from muddy that advises sticking with the grow nutrients until the girls stop growing vertically, which happens during weeks 5-6 (roughly days 35-48). My girls are still growing an inch a day (!) so I switched back to the grow nutrients at 1.5ml/L for a few more days. The growth is really something and it looks like some of the newest growth is not burnt now.

I read the breeder's strain guide when I selected Northern Cheese Haze originally, but I should have taken the time to re-read it when I started the grow. There's a lot of important info in there! I was worried about the slower growth and the size of the plants but they seem on track to reach 60-90cm and complete in 65-75 days. Also there is a shorter more compact phenotype which explains the short stature of my runt NCH 1.

For yield they say 100-160g is possible as a single plant grow but presumably that is on a farm in southern California or something. In a scenario with 6-9 plants in a 4' tent 500g is achievable. That's about 55g per plant which would be awesome!

Thank you for the updates and for the time it takes to research items so I can just read them. Many thanks Bro, Many thanks
